The adjusted area of the Ly Son Marine Protected Area covers 8,100 hectares, primarily the sea surface surrounding the main island and the smaller island. The mainland area is arranged in accordance with the local economic , social, and livelihood development orientation. The adjustment was made based on updated boundaries according to the General Planning Project for the Dung Quat Economic Zone in the Ly Son Island area until 2045.
The Ly Son Marine Protected Area has three functional zones: a strictly protected zone divided into four areas in the north and south of the main island, covering 620 hectares; an ecological restoration zone covering 2,024 hectares located in the coastal waters of the main and smaller islands; and finally, a service and administrative zone covering 4,556 hectares, which is the sea area surrounding the strictly protected and ecological restoration zones, adjacent to the buffer zone of the protected area. In addition, there is a buffer zone of 900 hectares.
According to the Quang Ngai Provincial People's Committee, the adjustment of the boundaries and area of the Ly Son Marine Protected Area aims to ensure consistency with the economic, social, national defense, and security development orientation of the Ly Son Special Economic Zone. At the same time, it aims to maintain and protect marine resources, biodiversity, habitats, breeding grounds of marine organisms, and the environment.
Established in 2016, the Ly Son Marine Protected Area covers over 9,613 hectares and is one of the areas with high biodiversity and fisheries resources. The protected area plays a crucial role in protecting the marine ecosystem, maintaining habitats and breeding grounds for many species, while also contributing to the development of ecotourism and improving livelihoods for local people.
