Foreign coaches will dominate the 2026 World Cup. |
According to AS , 31 out of 48 teams did not choose a domestic coach, meaning nearly two-thirds of the teams entered the tournament with foreign managers. This is a record high percentage of foreign coaches in the history of the tournament.
A host of big names contributed to shaping this diverse picture. Carlo Ancelotti led Brazil while Thomas Tuchel took charge of England. Mauricio Pochettino was also tasked with leading the US national team deep into the tournament on home soil.
Not only the big clubs, but many mid- and small teams are also boldly seeking "outsiders" on the coaching bench. Uzbekistan placed their trust in Fabio Cannavaro while Qatar gave the hot seat to Julen Lopetegui.
There are still 17 national teams that retain their domestic coaches in order to preserve their identity. Among this group, top candidates such as Lionel Scaloni's Argentina and Didier Deschamps' France are still highly regarded.
Notably, Argentina is the country that has exported the most coaches to the 2026 World Cup, with a host of strategists such as Pochettino, Marcelo Bielsa, and Gustavo Alfaro. Following closely behind are France, Spain, Italy, and Germany.
Clearly, the World Cup is not just a race between nations on the pitch, but also a global competition of tactical thinking. Behind the flags lies a world of coaches that is increasingly borderless.
