The island, with an area of approximately 4.4 km2, is located in a special position in the northeast of the Co To archipelago. It is the furthest island of Quang Ninh province and is considered a landmark in the northeast of the country, being less than 10 nautical miles from the Vietnam-China border demarcation line in the Gulf of Tonkin.

Tran Island has a high-speed ferry route connecting it from Cai Rong port, Ao Tien port in Van Don Special Economic Zone, and from Co To Island and Thanh Lan Island.

Tran Island remains a mystery to many tourists because it has not yet been developed for mass tourism. This has helped the island preserve its rare, pristine, and unspoiled beauty.
