On the morning of May 21st, at a talk on urban architectural heritage organized by the National Archives Center II, architect Nguyen Ngoc Son, a lecturer at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture, stated that the city possesses unique architectural heritage, formed through the continuous work of many generations of Vietnamese architects. However, it is regrettable that many of the architects behind the city's iconic buildings are gradually being forgotten over time.
"I realize we have lost sight of the core elements in fundamentally understanding the generation of Vietnamese architects and the foundations they left behind. That is the identification of the individuals, the architects," he said.
Architect Nguyen Ngoc Son said he spent more than 15 years researching data systems on 20th-century Vietnamese architecture, from the colonial era to the modern period, with the desire to restore the "identity" of the architects who contributed to shaping the urban landscape of Ho Chi Minh City.
In his reflection on iconic buildings in the city center, he mentioned the Independence Palace as a symbol of modern Vietnamese architecture. According to him, the building is associated with architect Ngo Viet Thu, who also left his mark on many other projects such as the Da Lat Nuclear Institute, the Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry, and the Phu Cam Cathedral in Hue .
He also expressed regret that some valuable works are no longer there, many of which were designed by architect Nguyen Quang Nhac.
According to architect Nguyen Ngoc Son, architectural heritage lies not only in the form of buildings but also in urban life, the memories of its citizens, and the way the city preserves its historical development through different periods.
Looking back at iconic architectural works is also a way to identify the urban identity and cultural values that many generations of Vietnamese intellectuals have left for the city.
