Doctors perform LAMS stent placement technique for patients with ultrasound endoscope

Previously, male patient PTN (born in 1995, residing in Can Tho City) was transferred to Can Tho Central General Hospital in a state of mild abdominal distension, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea many times. The patient had a history of pancreatitis for many years and had to be hospitalized regularly for treatment.

Abdominal CT scan (with contrast) showed that the patient had multiple cystic lesions around the pancreas behind the stomach, diffuse colon wall thickening, multiple dilated loops of small intestine with fluid retention. After that, the doctors performed a gastrointestinal ultrasound, the results determined that the patient had a pseudocyst of the pancreas in the tail of the pancreas, close to the stomach wall.

After consulting with specialists, the team of doctors decided to perform pancreatic pseudocyst drainage using LAMS stent placement technique under the guidance of an ultrasound endoscope (the procedure only takes 20 minutes).

After LAMS stent placement, the patient was conscious, skin and mucous membranes were pink, vital signs were stable, abdominal pain was reduced, and he was expected to be discharged in the next few days.

BSCKII. Nguyen Thi Quynh Mai, Head of Endoscopy Department (Can Tho Central General Hospital) said: LAMS stent placement ultrasound endoscopic technique brings many benefits such as less invasiveness, faster recovery time, less pain and lower risk of complications compared to open surgery. This is the first time this minimally invasive intervention technique has been deployed in the Mekong Delta, opening up opportunities to access the most advanced treatment techniques for patients with complex pancreatic diseases in the region.
