'Wish' was born in Disney's dark period

A decade ago, at a time when Disney and Pixar animations were few and far between, Frozen became a game-changer, grossing $1.2 billion worldwide—a box office hit. It won an Oscar, spawned a $1.45 billion sequel, and then a hit Broadway musical.

10 years later, Wish is released, co-written by Frozen 's Jennifer Lee, Allison Moore, and Chris Buck, and directed by Fawn Veerasunthorn. The film follows the heroine Asha (voiced by Ariana DeBose) who lives in the Kingdom of Rosas, ruled by King Magnifico (voiced by Chris Pine). He is a wizard who grants wishes. Residents share their greatest desires and then become his property. Wishers lose all memory of what they ever wished for.

Asha interviews to become Magnifico's apprentice. But as she gets closer to the king, Asha realizes that her teachings may be hiding something nefarious.

However, this idea is not enough to maintain the audience's interest as the film slides into a lackluster, uninteresting script.

Asha has two companions – a talking goat, a Pokemon-like star – but neither are sympathetic nor funny enough.

The animated film, which combines traditional watercolors with contemporary computer-generated characters, is a complete misstep, disappointingly familiar.

Wish (costing $200 million, released globally on November 24, including Vietnam) comes at a "chaotic" time for Disney when its 100th anniversary is overshadowed by underperforming films and a messy overall release strategy, of which the most recent blockbuster The Marvels is a specific example.
