The plan aims to transform Da Nang into an international coastal and tourist city by 2045.

The master plan for Da Nang City until 2045, with a vision to 2075, is being developed with a focus on expanding the coastal urban space, closely linking it with the former Quang Nam province, forming development hubs for tourism, services, logistics, and marine economy, gradually transforming Da Nang into an international tourism center and a leading growth engine of Central Vietnam.

On January 20th, the Da Nang City People's Committee organized a consultation workshop on the General Planning Task for the City until 2045, with a vision to 2075. The focus of the discussion was the spatial positioning of urban development within the regional linkage, especially the coastal urban- tourism axis from Son Tra Peninsula, Da Nang Bay to the south of the Thu Bon River.

According to the consulting firm's representative, in the scenario of expanding administrative boundaries and strengthening links with Quang Nam, Da Nang is positioned as a comprehensive region encompassing coastal, delta, midland, and mountainous areas, boasting diverse ecosystems and world cultural heritage sites such as Hoi An and My Son. This is a crucial foundation for forming a continuous urban-tourism chain, developing high-quality beach resort tourism, ecotourism, heritage tourism, and urban tourism.

The plan proposes a shift from a unipolar to a multipolar urban model, developing satellite cities linked to strategic infrastructure such as Da Nang International Airport, Lien Chieu Port, the coastal corridor, and the North-South expressway. The new urban centers are oriented towards integrating tourism, commerce, finance, entertainment, and innovation spaces, aiming to alleviate pressure on the existing city center while creating additional space for high-end tourism and service development.

The overall goal is to develop Da Nang into an international coastal city, a major tourism and service center in the Asia-Pacific region, playing a pivotal role in the Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City-Da Nang "growth triangle," and serving as a gateway for trade and tourist transit for Central Vietnam and the Central Highlands.

The projected population for the entire region is approximately 3.9 million by 2030 and around 6.4 million by 2045. The orientation towards multi-polar urbanization, developing coastal tourism urban areas, western ecological urban areas, and gateway cities linked to logistics, is considered a solution to both expand living space and enhance the capacity to serve international tourism and services.

At the seminar, experts noted that the use of the concept of "megacity" needs caution. Chairman of the Da Nang Architects Association, To Van Hung, argued that, according to international practice, a "megacity" typically has a population of over 10 million, while Da Nang will only reach approximately 6.4 million by 2045. Therefore, instead of chasing after the term, the focus should be on building a modern, smart, livable, and distinctive coastal city model.

Architect Tran Ngoc Chinh, President of the Vietnam Urban Planning and Development Association, emphasized that planning needs to effectively utilize coastal spaces, underground spaces, and elevated spaces, while integrating the cultural elements of Quang Nam - Da Nang into urban design, considering this as an important "soft resource" for sustainable tourism development and enhancing the destination's brand.

Concluding the workshop, Vice Chairman of Da Nang City People's Committee Le Quang Nam affirmed that the contributions of experts from both within and outside the country will be taken into account to finalize the general planning task.

The city requested the consulting firm to further clarify the development orientation of the coastal city - international tourism, regional linkages with the former Quang Nam province, adaptation to climate change and heritage preservation, with the aim of building Da Nang into a regional tourism, service and coastal urban center in the long term.
