On September 8, pregnant woman D.TY (born in 1991, from Hoang Dan commune, Tam Duong district, Vinh Phuc province) was 38 weeks pregnant with twins for the third time through IVF (in vitro fertilization) and was hospitalized.
The mother Y. has given birth twice. She had a cesarean section at 7:30 a.m. on September 9. The two baby boys were born weighing 2.9 kg and 3 kg respectively.
After birth, the mother and two babies are healthy.
The Vinh Phuc Provincial Department of Health said that the child's unusual death was not due to the hepatitis B vaccine.
At around 10am on September 10, the two children were vaccinated against hepatitis B.
At 11:45, one of the two babies suddenly turned purple, had difficulty breathing, and had respiratory failure and was given emergency care by doctors. However, one baby died.
At 3 p.m., the remaining baby also showed similar symptoms and was given emergency treatment by doctors at Vinh Phuc Province Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital, then transferred to the National Children's Hospital for further treatment.
Regarding the deceased child, after emergency treatment and genetic testing, doctors at the National Children's Hospital concluded: "The cause of death was due to the baby having a fatty acid metabolism disorder in newborns, which is one of the rare congenital diseases that can only be detected through in-depth genetic testing."
Thus, the child's unusual death was not due to the hepatitis B vaccine.
"In recent years, experts at the National Children's Hospital have encountered nearly 10 cases of children dying from hepatitis B vaccination, but the cause was not due to the vaccination at all, but rather due to the timing of the hepatitis B vaccination after birth, and the symptoms of congenital metabolic disease often worsened when the child was breastfed after 1 day," the National Children's Hospital informed.
