Supporting industry enterprises want to try their hand in fields with high technical requirements

Many successful supporting industry enterprises are now eager to try their hand in other industrial fields, by investing in technology content in products with higher technical requirements.

After more than 8 years of implementation, the Supporting Industry Development Program (SIDP) has brought a more colorful and brilliant picture, when enterprises have developed in both quantity and quality, with enough capacity to directly supply multinational corporations, gradually participating deeply in the global supply chain. However, the new context poses new demands and requirements for the SIDP industry, which will need more appropriate orientations and solutions in the coming period.

Limited raw materials

According to a survey in the JETRO White Book, Vietnam currently has more than 300 supporting industry enterprises and most of them are well-performing enterprises, with export orders for FDI enterprises or foreign supply chains. Ms. Bui Thi Hong Hanh, Vice President of the Vietnam Supporting Industry Enterprises Association, Director of NC Network Vietnam Company, said that enterprises themselves have been more proactive in setting specific challenges, problems and goals for themselves. That is to make quality products to supply to any field.

“However, the common limitation of supporting industry enterprises is still the limitation of raw materials. There are some enterprises that can completely make high quality and high value-added products, but they still lack processes, factory systems and, importantly, raw material sources,” Ms. Hanh expressed.

Affirming that any product chain or any product in any market needs the presence of supporting industry enterprises, Mr. Vu Dang Khoa, Deputy General Director of JK Industrial Joint Stock Company, said that when enterprises become links in the supply chain, or mature with supporting industry, they will easily shift according to market requirements.

“To become one of the enterprises in the global supply chain, it is necessary for enterprises to start from the first step, which is to conquer the domestic market. Many successful supporting industry enterprises are eager to try their hand in some other industrial fields, in a very specific strategy for the next 5-10 years, by investing in technology content in products with higher technical requirements, for example, related to the field of aircraft manufacturing,” Mr. Khoa suggested.

Specific planning is very important.

The solution for the development of supporting industry enterprises, Mr. Khoa said, enterprises can completely become one of the suppliers in the supply chain. But the spirit and goals must always be promoted, not just producing pallets, need to think about producing export product clusters, in the cluster will be related to mechanical production, plastic or rubber,... when forming a product cluster, enterprises will reduce production costs, eliminate tolerances and can be completely proactive in technology in Vietnam.

As a locality actively attracting investment in the field of supporting industry development, Ms. Do Viet Hong - Head of Industrial Management Department, Department of Industry and Trade of Da Nang City said that the city is focusing on a number of key and strong areas such as mechanical production, manufacturing, processing of components, metals and spare parts for automobiles, motorbikes, auto parts, small equipment, small industry as well as processing of microchips, technical components, auxiliary products for assembling electronic equipment and a number of areas of production of raw materials for the textile and footwear industries.

Given the current situation and advantages, for the development perspective of the Department of Industry and Trade on supporting industry, we will focus on the spearhead which is currently the strength of the city's supporting industry, which is supporting industry for the manufacturing industry. Increasing linkages, as well as prioritizing the attraction of production in areas such as processing technological components for the auto engine technology industry, as well as automation.

“There are even enterprises in the city that have produced aerospace equipment, electronic equipment and equipment for industry and information technology. Da Nang has its own concentrated information technology park, so attracting investment in the fields of manufacturing industry as well as designing and producing electronic components is very advantageous,” Ms. Hong affirmed.

According to Ms. Hong, with the existing strengths and the orientation of adjusting the industrial planning of Da Nang city in general, including planning specific industrial sectors, including supporting industry, in the coming time, the city will take steps to ensure that Da Nang's growth target reaches double digits.

According to Mr. Pham Van Quan, Deputy Director of the Department of Industry ( Ministry of Industry and Trade ), the Ministry is drafting the Law on Key Industries, in which supporting industry is considered one of the five key industrial groups. Besides the new materials industry, chemicals,... the Ministry will promote the enhancement of the role of supporting industry - not just a supporting industry as it is now, it needs to develop into a foundation industry, a strategic industry for development.

“The Ministry of Industry and Trade will quickly issue Circulars and Decrees to guide how to ensure transparency, accessibility and always update the needs of supporting industry enterprises while ensuring the development process of supporting industry quickly adapts to market needs,” Mr. Quan affirmed.
