Sao Mai Wind Power Joint Stock Company (a member of Sao Mai Group) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Investment Promotion and Management Committee of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, officially launching a wind power project in Xieng Khouang province (Northern Laos).
The project has a total investment of approximately $450 million and is expected to be implemented on an area of about 17,920 hectares in Nong Het district. This is a plateau area possessing favorable natural wind corridors, and is considered to have the potential for industrial-scale wind power development.
This area is located close to the eastern border of Laos, directly adjacent to Ky Son district ( Nghe An province). The center of Nong Het district is about 15-20 km by road from the Nam Can International Border Gate, creating favorable conditions for transporting equipment, construction, and connecting electricity transmission to Vietnam.
Given the rapidly increasing electricity demand in the North, especially during the dry season from April to July each year, there is always a risk of power shortages. Demand is projected to increase by approximately 10-13% annually, while hydropower resources are heavily dependent on weather conditions and reservoir water levels.
Connecting the power grid from Northern Laos to Nghe An and Thanh Hoa provinces will provide a stable source of clean energy, promptly meeting the electricity consumption needs of the domestic market.
Besides its energy value, Sao Mai Group also plans to develop a "wind tourism ecosystem" model in Xieng Khouang. Leveraging the success of the An Hao solar power eco-tourism area (An Giang province), they aim to transform wind farms into aesthetic highlights, boosting the local tourism economy .
The project is expected to create jobs for hundreds of local workers and contribute to social development and education funds in Xieng Khouang province. The survey process also commits to adhering to strict standards to protect the protective forest and the agricultural land of the local people.
The implementation of this project not only affirms the capabilities of Vietnamese businesses on the regional renewable energy map but also contributes to strengthening the special friendship between the governments of Vietnam and Laos.
