New, unique
After 10pm on March 22, after finishing the night tour at the zoo, many young people still drove into the zoo to register to participate in "When the night falls", showing the special attraction of the program to visit and experience the nightlife of wild animals for many people.
As one of the first tourists to join the program, Nguyen Gia Cat Tuong could not hide her excitement: "I was very impressed with the hyena because it was very wild and had a laugh that scared me. I wanted to meet the raccoon Cong Thi Ten No, and the white tiger because it had a very interesting story so I also wanted to learn more."
For Ms. Bui Thanh Thuy, living in Tan Binh district, the visit with her daughter to "When the night falls" at the Zoo was an impressive experience.
"After learning about the night animal viewing tour on the Zoo's Facebook page, I decided to take my child to see it because the feeling of seeing animals at night is definitely very different from the day. I get to immerse myself in the nocturnal hunting life of wild animals, like I am the prey, being looked at and hunted by them, it's a bit scary but very interesting and exciting, learning about many other characteristics of predators and herbivores at night" - Ms. Thuy shared.
“Walk lightly, speak softly” – the guide’s advice before stepping into the darkness made the tourists even more excited and curious. It was a truly interesting feeling when everyone had to keep quiet, strain their eyes, listen attentively to every footstep and breath of the nocturnal animals.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nhut, Deputy Director of the Zoo, shared that the Zoo used to be open during the day, but many visitors complained that they came to visit the animal cages but did not see any animals. Later, they discovered that these animals were nocturnal and hid in their caves during the day. From that reality, the Zoo came up with the idea of a night tour, creating an opportunity for visitors to witness the wild life of many nocturnal animals.
In the program, visitors can watch predators such as tigers, leopards, hyenas... on their journey to find food, as well as witness herbivores, waterfowl... that are most active when night falls.
There are also king cobras and reticulated pythons, which have quite unique hunting habits at night; or leopards with excellent hiding abilities, which have the habit of hunting and resting on high tree branches.
The journey of discovery also includes the fire leopard, a rare predator with beautiful fur, and the gentle-looking raccoon, which is very agile and has mischievous actions....
Experience differently
Visiting the Zoo at night with his family, Tran Khuong Duy, 12 years old, living in District 6, excitedly said: "Many animals sleep in the morning, but wake up at night and are more active, walking around. I like the tiger the most because it is beautiful, cool, and fierce. I find this tour interesting and fun."
One of the attractions of the trip is the opportunity to admire the phenomenon of glowing eyes of animals in the dark - a special biological feature that helps them hunt and adapt to low-light environments. This is a rare opportunity to discover nocturnal animals that are difficult to observe during the day, providing a unique and fascinating experience of the natural world .
Currently, the night animal tour is only held on Saturday evenings. Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nhut, Deputy Director, said: The Zoo is currently a member of the World, Southeast Asia and Vietnam Zoo Associations, with a set of animal welfare standards, aiming to bring the best physical and mental conditions to animals. Therefore, when building the program, it is also based on this standard and other standards of the livestock, forestry and agricultural sectors; focusing on the nocturnal animal area, ensuring sound, light and interaction so as not to affect the animals during the day.
According to Mr. Nhut, expanding the tour to let more tourists know is also very good so that everyone can learn about other activities of the Zoo, but doing it with such density must also be based on animal welfare standards, which means how to let the animals here, both day and night animals, have time to rest, ensure their habits and not be affected by the program, so this is considered carefully.
Not only stopping at observation, the program also creates conditions for visitors to interact with animals in the natural environment. Throughout the trip, the guides are experienced staff of the Zoo and Botanical Garden, introducing visitors, helping them better understand the habits and behaviors of each species, along with interesting and humorous stories about the origin of the names and nicknames of each animal raised and cared for here.
Hoang Thuy Duyen, a 22-year-old girl who just came from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City with her friend to go on a night tour of the Zoo and Botanical Garden, said that she had only known about the tour for a few days and had hurriedly registered. At first, there were no seats available, but then she was arranged to join, so she was very happy.
"I found the night tour at the Zoo quite fun and interesting, hearing about the behaviors and habits of animals that I had never seen in real life before. I love the raccoon and its family, they are so adorable" - Thuy Duyen expressed.
A special feature of the night tour at the Zoo is that visitors also have the opportunity to enjoy a very different experience at night in the heart of the city. There, the harmony between nature and urban space creates an interesting, profound feeling. Temporarily leaving behind the hustle and bustle, visitors can immerse themselves in a quiet space, listen to the sounds of nature and feel the mysterious beauty of the night, bringing an impressive relaxation.
