Denmark's European Championship victory that year is considered one of the miracles of modern football, especially since the Nordic team was said to have been hastily assembled at the last minute to replace Yugoslavia, who were banned from participating.
Klinsmann helpless before Schmeichel

Peter Schmeichel (then 28) left the German stars in despair with some incredible saves. Klinsmann's low shot was one of the most difficult to block. And how the Danish goalkeeper calmly caught a cross with one hand in the penalty area is also unforgettable!
It was the most shocking Euro title in European football history and was only overshadowed by Greece's 2004 triumph.
Two former German players who participated in the final that year recalled the match. They told the newspaper Bild. Midfielder Guido Buchwald (now 63 years old) recalled: "Peter made some saves for Denmark that made us desperate. The football gave the Danish positions a boost and created a victory. Peter was the one who guaranteed that shock."
Center-back Jürgen Kohler (58 years old) sadly said: "This defeat is still the most bitter in my career because it came unexpectedly. We should have been leading 3-0 before the first goal. But Peter Schmeichel made excellent saves."

At 2am on June 30 (8pm local time), the German team will meet Denmark again and face another Schmeichel – Kasper, the son of the "nemesis" of 32 years ago, in the round of 16. The German press is worried again.
Compared to his father 32 years ago, Kasper is now 37 years old, past his peak form when he won the English championship with Leicester, but has still been the number 1 goalkeeper of the Danish national team for the past 10 years. Leaving England in 2022, he was unsuccessful in Nice (France) but managed to regain his class in Anderlecht (Belgium).
In Denmark, Kasper is known as "Mur" (the wall) and will make his 105th international appearance tonight. His father won 129 caps for the national team and scored one goal.
Flemming Povlsen (57 years old), a former player who won Euro 1992 with Peter Schmeichel, commented: "Peter is the goalkeeper who seems to be stronger, often rushing out of the penalty area for every high ball. Kasper is much calmer, with strong reflexes on the goal line. However, both have impressive saves."
At Euro 2024, Peter Schmeichel is a football commentator for Fox Sports. There is an interesting image of Schmeichel Sr. interviewing his son after the 1-1 draw between Denmark and England and then receiving a football shirt from his son…
