At the 33rd SEA Games, the host country Thailand has adjusted the competition regulations, eliminating two team and all-around events that are the strengths of Vietnamese Gymnastics, especially in the men's team. The Games only organize men's and women's single events, and limit each country to register a maximum of 4 male athletes and 3 female athletes. Besides, the competition in this congress is also very high because countries like the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia... have made systematic and long-term investments, gathering many top athletes. In the last 3 SEA Games, Vietnamese Gymnastics has always maintained high achievements with 3 Gold medals at SEA Games 30, 4 Gold medals at SEA Games 31 and 4 Gold medals at SEA Games 32. At the 33rd SEA Games, the Vietnamese gymnastics team will compete for medals in 10 individual events, aiming to win 2 to 3 gold medals. Sharing with Tien Phong newspaper reporter, coach Truong Minh Sang said that this goal is suitable for the current context. The team will focus on two strong events: the horse and the hanging ring, which are considered to be the best in the region. In the current stage, the team focuses on stabilizing the technical and physical aspects, conducting tests to evaluate, edit and gain experience as well as training the mentality.
They will have to face very strong opponents, but Coach Truong Minh Sang - with his extensive experience as a person who has won more than 50 gold medals at home and abroad, then trained many of Vietnam's top gymnasts to win tickets to the 2021 Olympics, won gold medals at the Asian Games and the World Cup - reminded his students "not to worry about who they compete with, but to try to overcome themselves, overcome weaknesses and promote strengths to achieve their goals".
Dang Ngoc Xuan Thien is one of the hopes to win Gold in the horse racing event. Dinh Phuong Thanh, an athlete who has won 11 SEA Games Gold medals and 1 Asiad Silver medal, is also an important member of the Vietnamese Gymnastics team. At the 33rd SEA Games, he competed in the horizontal bar and parallel bars. Trinh Hai Khang completed the test on November 21st in the vault event. At the 2024 World Gymnastics Cup, he was the only athlete to participate in the final of the single vault event and ranked 8th. For Nguyen Van Khanh Phong, the goal will be to defend the number one position in Southeast Asia in the rings event. The young man from Ho Chi Minh City also won the Silver medal at the 2023 Asian Championship and the Silver medal at the 19th Asian Games.
During practice, Khanh Phong continued to demonstrate good techniques in his signature hanging ring exercise.
At the 33rd SEA Games, the three female athletes of the Vietnamese Gymnastics team include Nguyen Thi Quynh Nhu, Tran Doan Quynh Nam and Le Thi Thanh Phuong.
Returning after a SEA Games 32 without a women's event, the female athletes are determined to make a miracle in Thailand.
According to coach Truong Minh Sang, the players are in perfect condition in terms of technique, tactics, physical strength and spirit, ready to conquer the goals at SEA Games 33.
