Fear of school violence

Recently, the situation of school violence in Tay Ninh province has become complicated, causing concern in the educational community and society. In November, My Quy Middle and High School (My Quy commune) recorded four consecutive cases of students fighting inside and outside the school grounds, in which many students participated, both during class hours and in front of the school gate. Some cases were discovered by teachers in time; others forced the authorities to intervene to verify and handle.

The first incident occurred on October 30, involving two ninth-grade students. On November 10, three sixth- and seventh-grade students beat a sixth-grade student. Two days later, on November 12, the school discovered a group of four seventh-grade students assaulting a fellow student. Also on November 12, a tenth-grade student got into a fight with three teenagers who were former students at the school but had dropped out. The People's Committee of My Quy Commune said that the commune police coordinated with the school to work with parents and students; and continued to handle cases of those who had dropped out of school according to regulations.

The Board of Directors of My Quy Middle and High School said that immediately after discovering the incidents, the homeroom teachers and the Board of Directors directly worked with the students involved, asking them to write reports, self-criticize, and commit to not re-offending. The school invited parents to discuss, coordinate education, and organize mediation between the students, in order to stabilize their psychology and prevent similar incidents from occurring.

The above incidents not only reflect student behavior problems, but also pose potential safety risks if management, coordination and skills education are not truly effective.

Faced with the risk of increasing school violence, the Department of Education and Training, the Tay Ninh Provincial Police force and localities have synchronously deployed propaganda and education solutions and tightened management to ensure school safety throughout the province.

Captain Pham Quoc Thai, Deputy Chief of Tan Ninh Ward Police, said that, in the face of the increasing and younger trend of incidents related to social order, the Ward Police have increased coordination with local schools to promote propaganda to prevent school violence. Through thematic activities, the authorities provide information on typical incidents, analyze the consequences and handling frameworks so that students can raise awareness, know how to restrain and resolve conflicts in a civilized manner, and not let violations of the law arise.

In addition to propaganda, the Ward Police also randomly checked school bags in some classrooms to detect and prevent the carrying of dangerous objects, supporting tools or weapons. The results of the inspection showed that students complied well, no violations were detected. Captain Thai emphasized that this activity was both a preventive measure and a deterrent, reminding students to focus on their studies and not to carry objects that could potentially cause safety risks.

Comprehensive combination of propaganda - inspection - education

Not only promoting the prevention of school violence, the Tay Ninh Provincial Police force also integrates traffic safety education, organizes inspections and reminds students to comply with regulations when moving in front of school gates and on the roads, in order to build a safe school environment, reduce the risk of accidents and contribute to maintaining social order.

Lieutenant Colonel Cao Thanh Vu, an officer of the Traffic Police Department's Traffic Investigation and Violation Handling Team, said: Since the beginning of the school year, the force has implemented a direct propaganda plan at schools, instructing students on safe driving skills and accident prevention. Along with propaganda, working groups randomly check school bags and car trunks to detect and prevent the carrying of weapons - a potential cause of school violence. This measure helps deter and discourage students from carrying dangerous objects, reducing the risk of conflicts inside and outside of school.

Accordingly, the provincial Traffic Police force has established 29 working groups, mobilized 76 officers and 60 commune and ward police to check 111 junior high and high school locations across the province. Through inspection, the authorities recorded 1,172 motorbikes parked at 96 parking spots that accept students' vehicles; all spots have signed a commitment not to accept vehicles of students who are not qualified to drive.

At the same time, the work of mobilizing parents has been strongly implemented. To date, 16,724 parents at 111 schools have signed a commitment not to give their children motorbikes and electric motorbikes when they are not old enough. Through actual inspection, the authorities discovered many violations such as not installing rearview mirrors, wearing poor quality helmets; some middle school students carrying three-section sticks, high school students using regular cigarettes and electronic cigarettes. From these risks, the authorities continue to tighten the management of parking lots, strictly handle cases where families hand over vehicles in violation of regulations, and increase patrols in school areas on national and provincial highways to reduce traffic accidents and prevent school violence.

Huynh Tuan Duy, a student of class 10C8, Le Quy Don High School (Tan Ninh Ward), said that complying with traffic safety regulations is a mandatory awareness every time he goes to school, from driving in the correct lane, not running red lights to always wearing a standard helmet. Helmets are not only mandatory equipment but also a "shield" to protect the head, minimizing injuries in the event of an accident. At the same time, he recommends that his friends choose quality helmets.

Knowing about many cases of school violence on the internet, Duy shared that this is a wrongful act, causing harm to both the physical and educational environment. He agrees with the sudden inspection activities of the functional forces at the school, considering this a necessary measure to prevent the bringing of weapons and electronic cigarettes into the school. In addition, students must train themselves to be aware, obey traffic laws and know how to control their emotions, resolve conflicts in a civilized manner to contribute to building a safe school environment.

Not only focusing on knowledge education, middle and high schools in the province also coordinate with functional forces to check school bags, students' vehicles and periodically propagate traffic safety, prevent and combat school violence. These activities not only deter and prevent the carrying of weapons and dangerous objects but also raise students' sense of discipline and responsibility, contributing to building a safe, healthy and civilized school environment.

Teacher Tran Quang Hiep, Principal of Ha Long Primary, Secondary and High School ( Long An Ward), said that the school has identified the task of ensuring school safety as a top priority. Along with promoting propaganda and education on preventing and combating school violence, Ha Long Primary, Secondary and High School has closely coordinated with the authorities to periodically inspect students, school bags and vehicles. This is one of the drastic measures to prevent the risk of carrying weapons and harmful objects, especially when there are gatherings and conflicts outside the school gate.

According to teacher Tran Quang Hiep, to have a truly safe and healthy learning environment, not only management and inspection from the school is needed, but also high awareness from parents and students - maintaining discipline, promoting the role of each member in the educational community. The combination of propaganda - inspection - comprehensive education is considered a model that needs to be replicated to respond to the risk of violence and school insecurity.

Ms. Nguyen Van Thi Thuc Hien (a parent of a student in Long An ward) expressed her deep expectations for the seriousness of school safety work. According to her, parents and schools need to coordinate closely in checking school bags, vehicles, controlling dangerous objects and preventing deviant behaviors. Only when parents are unanimous and the school maintains regular supervision, will students be aware of their responsibilities, thereby creating a safe and disciplined school environment, not ignoring the risk of violence or violations of order.
