More and more Vietnamese tourists choose domestic travel.

The recently released Travel Trends 2026 report by digital travel platform Agoda shows that the key factor for markets to attract more Vietnamese tourists is simplifying visa procedures.

Specifically, 91% of survey participants said they would travel more often if visa procedures were relaxed and access to new countries became easier. The need for people to travel has become more popular, associated with the development of the middle class in Vietnam, and the exploration of new destinations has also increased significantly.

58% of Vietnamese travelers said removing visa barriers would encourage them to plan trips to more countries and destinations. Specifically, 6 in 10 said visa policies are currently - or are likely to - affect their travel plans.

This is also easy to explain when Vietnamese tourists prioritize domestic trips, noting that domestic tourism is increasingly attractive. Specifically, 50% of tourists plan to travel domestically instead of internationally, an increase compared to 26% last year.

Rooms priced under 1.3 million/night are given priority.

Aside from visas, Vietnamese tourists prioritize cost-saving options when choosing where to stay. More than 90% of respondents said they were willing to spend a maximum of VND2.6 million per night, with 56% planning to spend less than VND1.3 million (USD50) per night, while only 36% planned to spend between VND1.3 million and VND2.6 million (USD51 - USD100) per night.

The need for rest and relaxation is the main motivation for Vietnamese tourists when traveling, with 45% seeing vacations as the ideal time to recharge.

Cultural exploration and culinary experiences ranked second and third respectively, providing insight into destinations looking to reach and attract Vietnamese tourists in 2026.

According to the Henley Passport Index 2025, the Vietnamese passport ranks 89th with 50 countries allowing visa-free entry, showing great potential for markets that want to attract more Vietnamese tourists.

The report also noted that Vietnamese tourists spend an average of 4 to 7 days on each trip. Of these, 61% prefer to travel with family and 18% prefer to travel with their lover or partner, showing that the need to enjoy time with loved ones is still a top priority.

Along with that, 32% said travelers plan to take 4 to 6 trips in 2026.

Mr. Vu Ngoc Lam - Country Director of Agoda in Vietnam - said that the Travel Trends 2026 report provides a clear view of what Vietnamese travelers are looking for in the coming year. The results show that visa policies have a strong impact on their travel plans, especially when barriers are removed, they are willing to explore more.
