The earthquake occurred in Houaphan province, Laos, about 2.5 km from the Vietnamese border in Na Meo commune, Thanh Hoa province. The natural disaster risk level is 0.

Earlier, at 23:26:19, a 4.8 magnitude earthquake occurred near this area, with a focal depth of 10km and a level 1 natural disaster risk. The earthquake caused many people in several provinces and cities in Vietnam to clearly feel the shaking. Even in Hanoi , many residents expressed concern as their houses, furniture, and belongings shook noticeably.
Houaphan Province (Laos), bordering Thanh Hoa (Vietnam), lies on the Ma River fault zone, which extends from Dien Bien and Lai Chau down to Quan Son (Thanh Hoa) and into Laos. This area frequently experiences minor earthquakes due to the activity of the fault zone.
According to scientists, earthquakes with a magnitude of 4-5 are considered mild but can still cause shaking, especially in areas with tall buildings. These earthquakes usually cause little to no damage.
