A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck off the coast of northern Japan at around 11:15 p.m. on December 8, triggering a tsunami in several coastal communities and injuring 23 people, according to AP. Authorities warned of the possibility of aftershocks and a superquake.
The Japan Meteorological Agency reported the earthquake's magnitude at 7.5, down from an earlier estimate of 7.6.
"Twenty-three people were injured, including one seriously, mostly by falling objects," the Fire and Disaster Management Agency said.

The Japanese government is still assessing the damage from the earthquake and tsunami. “I have never seen such a big earthquake,” convenience store owner Nobuo Yamada in the town of Hachinohe in Aomori Prefecture told NHK television.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said a tsunami as high as 70 cm was recorded at Kuji port in Iwate prefecture, south of Aomori, and waves as high as 50 cm hit other coastal communities in the area.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara urged residents to move to higher ground or seek shelter until the advisory is lifted. He said about 800 homes were without power, and Shinkansen bullet trains and some local lines were suspended in some areas.
