Peruvian officials said a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck the southern Pacific coast of the country on the evening of May 19, injuring 27 people and damaging buildings.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the epicenter was located approximately 20km east-southeast of the town of Pampa de Tate in the Ica region, at a focal depth of about 56.5km.
Peruvian Defense Minister Amadeo Flores visited the scene, inspecting several damaged structures, including the University of San Luis Gonzaga.
Earthquakes occur frequently in Peru because the country lies on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an area of volcanoes and geological faults surrounding the Pacific Ocean basin.
