Strong earthquake in Japan: Tsunami has appeared, citizens urgently evacuated

According to updated information, the 7.6 magnitude earthquake that occurred at 11:15 p.m. on December 8 local time (ie 9:15 p.m. the same day Vietnam time) shook most of Northern and Eastern Japan.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said the quake struck about 80 kilometers off the coast of Aomori Prefecture, with a depth of 50 kilometers. The JMA said tsunami waves of 40 centimeters were observed at the ports of Mutsu Ogawara in Aomori and Urakawa in Hokkaido before midnight.

Due to the earthquake, services on the Tohoku Shinkansen bullet train line in northeastern Japan have been suspended. Evacuation efforts are underway.

Currently, authorities have not detected any abnormalities at the Fukushima, Higashidori and Onagawa nuclear power plants.
