Strong earthquake in Japan: Tsunami detected, citizens urgently evacuated.

According to updated information, the 7.6 magnitude earthquake that occurred at 11:15 PM local time on December 8th (9:15 PM same day in Vietnam) shook much of northern and eastern Japan.

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said the earthquake occurred about 80 kilometers off the coast of Aomori Prefecture, with a focal depth of 50 kilometers. The JMA reported observing a 40cm-high tsunami at the ports of Mutsu Ogawara in Aomori and Urakawa in Hokkaido before midnight.

Due to the earthquake, Shinkansen Tohoku high-speed train services in northeastern Japan have been temporarily suspended. Evacuation efforts are underway.

Authorities have not yet detected any abnormalities at the Fukushima, Higashidori, and Onagawa nuclear power plants.
