Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online on the evening of May 18th, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Anh - Director of the Institute of Earth Sciences (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) - said that an earthquake had just occurred in Liuzhou (China) tonight.
Specifically, at 8:44 PM tonight, a 5.2 magnitude earthquake occurred in Liuzhou (China) - more than 500km from Hanoi as the crow flies - with a focal depth of approximately 10km.
"Due to the impact of this earthquake, some tall buildings in remote areas may have felt the tremors," Mr. Xuan Anh informed.
Mr. Xuan Anh stated that initial assessments indicate the earthquake poses no natural disaster risk to Vietnam (level 0). The Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center - Institute of Earth Sciences is continuing to monitor the situation.
Following the earthquake, many residents in high-rise buildings in Hanoi reported feeling the tremors.
"I was sitting on the 10th floor when I felt the shaking, it felt like I was experiencing vertigo," confirmed Mr. Trong Quy (from Hanoi).
In Vietnam, earthquakes with a magnitude of 5-5.9 are classified as moderate earthquakes.
These earthquakes can cause moderate to severe damage to poorly designed structures; no damage or minor damage to well-designed structures; and can be fatal depending on the circumstances of the impact.
Between 1,000 and 1,500 earthquakes occur worldwide each year.
