High technology applications in aquaculture
In recent years, many aquaculture households in Dong Nai have boldly applied science and technology to production, increasing productivity, reducing costs and bringing about outstanding economic efficiency. With the advantage of a large water surface area, abundant agricultural land fund and sustainable development orientation, Dong Nai province is opening up many opportunities to become the leading high-tech aquaculture production area in the Southern region.
In Phuoc An commune, Thanh Cong Agricultural and Aquatic Service Cooperative has been implementing a high-tech shrimp farming model for many years. The pond system is lined with tarpaulin and equipped with a water and waste treatment system, ensuring an optimal environment for shrimp growth while also controlling diseases well.

Mr. Nguyen Huy Binh - Director of the Cooperative said that applying high technology in shrimp farming helps increase the number of crops per year, shrimp output per crop is much higher than traditional methods. Thanks to that, the cooperative's high-tech shrimp farming area has expanded to more than 30 hectares. Support policies from the locality, such as investment in traffic infrastructure, electricity systems, etc., also create favorable conditions for farmers to develop.
Not only shrimp, many freshwater fish farmers are also applying science and technology to increase production efficiency. Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thanh's family (Phu Hoa commune) owns a 40-hectare fish farm and more than 160 rafts on the La Nga River. He also raises specialty fish such as catfish, catfish, and goby fish... with an output of about 2,000 tons/year, supplying to major wholesale markets across the country.
Mr. Thanh said that to ensure productivity and quality of fish, he improved the raft chain with wide railings, shade nets and adjusted the amount of food according to the weather. Thanks to that, even in the rainy season, his raft system still has stable output, ensuring year-round supply and bringing in billions of dong in profit each year.
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Vien, Chairman of Phu Hoa Commune People's Committee, the commune currently has nearly 10km of La Nga River and about 200ha of ponds for aquaculture. Freshwater fish farming has brought high economic efficiency and stable output.
“The locality's orientation is to develop safe aquaculture, apply high technology associated with tourism, and at the same time build a brand for fish farming areas to increase economic value,” said Mr. Vien.

Prospects for high-tech aquaculture
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Nai province, the whole province currently has nearly 10,000 hectares of aquaculture ponds, more than 1,500 rafts and more than 6,000 cages on rivers, along with 20 reservoirs with an area of nearly 52,000 hectares. Total aquatic product output reaches more than 82,000 tons/year, of which fish farming accounts for 89%, shrimp farming 8%. Currently, there are 27 domestic enterprises and 18 foreign enterprises operating in the aquaculture sector, along with 8 high-tech aquaculture cooperatives, forming solid linkage chains.
Mr. Nguyen Truong Giang, Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries of Dong Nai, said that although Dong Nai has no sea, it has a rich river and lake system such as Tri An Lake, Dong Nai River, and La Nga River; at the same time, after the administrative merger, the water surface area has been expanded, creating a large space for aquaculture development.
“In the coming time, the industry will focus on raising specialty species, promoting intensive farming models applying high technology, based on value chains and market demand. Successful models in Long Thanh and Nhon Trach areas will be replicated throughout the province,” Mr. Giang shared.
Dong Nai is facing the opportunity to make a strong breakthrough in the aquaculture sector, from ponds, lakes, rivers to high-tech farming models. The combination of natural advantages, the application of science and technology and the support of local authorities is opening up the prospect of becoming a leading high-tech aquaculture area in the Southern region for the province, while enhancing the agricultural value and product reputation in the domestic and international markets.
