The veteran is Vu Thi Minh Thai (84 years old), a fellow countryman and younger sister of former President Tran Duc Luong when he was in secondary school in Quang Ngai . Despite her advanced age and difficulty in walking, to bid farewell to her “older brother”, Mrs. Thai used a cane and took a bus from Tan Phu district to Thong Nhat Hall, District 1 very early.
At the age of 84, Mr. Thai's story is clear-headed, especially when talking about his fellow countryman "brother". "When he was in school, everyone knew that Mr. Luong was very gentle and always treated his friends very well. After he became a high-ranking official in the government, I only had contact with him and only followed him on television. I still remember his contributions to the Party, his development decisions, helping the country escape from difficulties, expanding integration, developing key areas, and promoting the country's development!" - Mr. Thai was moved.
Mr. Thai wrote down his feelings and memories when visiting formerPresident Tran Duc Luong.
“I still remember one time when I was coming back from school, passing Sa Huynh mountain, Mr. Luong and us went to pick wild mangosteen fruit and ate them together. Then my friends and I also grew up to join the resistance war. I was honored to receive the First, Second, and Third Class Glorious Soldier medals from him for my good achievements while serving in the army. Time flies, decades have passed, all of us have changed our hair color, and he is no longer here! What he contributed to the Party and our country, I and the Vietnamese people will remember forever!” - Mr. Thai shared.
Taking a bus from Long An with her two young children, Ms. Thanh Mai said that she had never met former President Tran Duc Luong in person, but when she was young, her father explained to her the decisions that the former President had made for the people and the country, and Ms. Mai was extremely impressed. Although her house was far away, when she heard that Ho Chi Minh City was holding a memorial service, she arranged her work and went with her two children to light incense for the former President to show her respect.
The two young people got their clothes soaked by the rain so they just stood outside to pay their respects.
Outside the Reunification Hall, it was raining heavily, but there were still two young people standing in the rain, holding umbrellas, looking inside the Reunification Wall area. Ha Linh, from Hoa Binh, was on her way to Ho Chi Minh City with her family when the announcement of former President Tran Duc Luong's death was made. Ignoring the tourist attractions, Linh and her friend went to the Reunification Hall hoping to pay their respects. The sudden rain soaked Linh and her friend, so they just stood outside looking in and silently praying.
Also in front of the Reunification Hall, a girl of about 18 years old carried a flower basket and rode her motorbike to ask where to park. When we said that the funeral procession did not accept flower baskets, the girl sadly asked if she could order them in front of the Reunification Hall. Because this flower basket was the girl's thoughts and feelings, wishing to present them to former President Tran Duc Luong.
Many people came to Reunification Hall to register to pay their respects.
In addition to the groups, many people came with their families to pay their respects.
