FIFA has invited Iran to its headquarters in Switzerland. |
According to ESPN , FIFA has sent an official invitation to the Football Federation of Iran (FFIRI), requesting that representatives be sent to its headquarters in Zurich before May 20th to discuss participation in the 2026 World Cup. This move comes amid doubts about Iran's presence at the tournament following the outbreak of conflict between the US and Israel in the Middle East in February.
The 2026 World Cup will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, making political factors particularly sensitive. However, FIFA President Gianni Infantino reassured the public by confirming that Iran will still participate as planned. Speaking at the FIFA Congress in Vancouver, he emphasized: "First of all, I want to confirm that Iran will definitely participate in the 2026 World Cup. And they will play in the United States as planned."
Previously, the Iranian delegation was the only one absent from the FIFA Congress due to issues with Canadian immigration authorities.
FFIRI chairman Mehdi Taj and his associates were forced to return home after being denied entry, amid concerns that individuals linked to the IRGC are ineligible to enter Canada.
This incident prompted Iran to proactively offer to work directly with FIFA to resolve the issues arising ahead of the tournament. Despite many variables off the field, FIFA has maintained a clear stance that Iran will not be absent from the 2026 World Cup.
According to the schedule, Iran will be based in Tucson, Arizona, and will compete in Group G alongside New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt. Their opening match will take place on June 16th in Los Angeles.
