Recently, Dong Thap province has recorded several rabies outbreaks in dogs and cats, including a new outbreak at Mr. C.'s household (Tram Chim commune). Currently, the family's dogs are being monitored and quarantined at home.
Previously, one dog in the pack had contracted rabies and was euthanized by veterinary authorities as per regulations; the family had given the humans rabies serum and vaccines, and vaccinated all their pets.
This is one of 10 rabies outbreaks recorded in the province in 2025, with 12 infected dogs subsequently culled. According to authorities, rabies remains a high risk, especially in rural areas where vaccination rates for dogs and cats are uneven and free-roaming is still common.
Mr. Bach Tuan Kiet, Deputy Head of the Department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine of Dong Thap province, said that the veterinary sector is coordinating with local authorities to implement disease prevention and control measures such as immediately destroying infected animals, vaccinating the affected area, and coordinating with the health sector to monitor the health of people in the surrounding area.
Authorities advise people to fully vaccinate their dogs and cats; not to let pets roam freely; and to muzzle or leash them when taking them outside. If bitten by a dog or cat, people should immediately go to a medical facility for advice and preventive treatment.
According to statistics, the rabies vaccination rate for dogs and cats in the province currently reaches over 75% of the total population, but the distribution is uneven; in rural areas, remote areas, and mountainous regions, the rate remains low, posing a potential risk of disease outbreaks and spread.
