Dong Thap: Efforts to preserve, restore and promote the value of ancient houses in Dong Hoa Hiep Ancient Village

Cai Be Commune, Dong Thap Province has the Dong Hoa Hiep Ancient House Village architectural and artistic relic managed by organizations, individuals and the community, with more than 14 ancient houses dating back over 100 years. Up to now, some ancient houses have been restored and preserved and are famous tourist attractions attracting a large number of domestic and foreign tourists.

Dong Hoa Hiep ancient village was formed in the 18th century with many houses built with precious woods, tiled roofs, high and wide, unique architecture combining the East and the West... In 2017, Dong Hoa Hiep ancient village was ranked as a National Monument by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

Currently, in Dong Hoa Hiep Ancient House Village, there are 5 ancient houses open to serve tourists such as: Mr. Kiet's ancient house, Ba Duc's ancient house, Mr. Vo's ancient house, Mr. Muoi's ancient house, Mr. Xoat's ancient house. Of which, Mr. Kiet's ancient house was restored and repaired by the Japanese government's JICA organization, while the remaining ancient houses were repaired and restored by the owners themselves for tourism business.

Ba Duc Ancient House

The ancient houses in Dong Hoa Hiep are located along the river, canals interwoven with lush and cool fruit gardens, within a radius of about 2km with many unique architectural features, a tourist destination that attracts many domestic and international visitors.

In the ancient houses, there are still many sets of parallel sentences inlaid with mother-of-pearl, elaborately carved tables and chairs, and many rare porcelain items, showing the rich and elegant hobby of wealthy families in the old South.

In addition, wooden, ceramic and bronze items such as altars, tables and chairs, vases, plates, cups, incense burners and statues, which are very aesthetic and have rare value, have also been preserved to this day. The outside space is a large yard, decorated with ancient bonsai trees; in front there is a fence and a sturdy, spacious gate...

In recent times, Dong Thap province has made efforts to preserve and exploit the value of ancient houses in the ancient village such as: restoration, landscape improvement, supporting the community to participate in tourism... However, tourism products in Dong Hoa Hiep Ancient House Village are still not really outstanding, and the connection activities between households are not uniform.

Mr. Kiet's ancient house has been classified by Japanese archaeologists as one of the "Nine most beautiful houses" in Vietnam.

According to Mr. Vo Pham Tan, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Dong Thap province, to preserve and promote the value of Dong Hoa Hiep Ancient House Village, the functional sector is continuing to promote the awareness of heritage protection for people living in the area, focusing on environmental sanitation. At the same time, promote the socialization of conservation work, promote the value of the ancient village and encourage and create conditions for individuals and organizations at home and abroad to participate in the work of preserving, restoring and embellishing the heritage.

Dong Hoa Hiep ancient village is increasingly attracting tourists to visit, research, experience, especially international tourists. However, to promote the potential and advantages of the ancient village, in addition to the efforts of local households, there needs to be attention and support from the provincial and central levels, especially funding to develop infrastructure, wharves, roads to serve tourists and to restore and maintain degraded ancient architecture.
