Sharing with Thanh Nien Newspaper reporters, Dr. Nguyen Tan Tran Minh Khang, Vice Principal of the University of Information Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University) analyzed the distribution of high school graduation exam scores in 2025 and predicted the university admission scores for the school's majors this year.
"Talking numbers" about the 2025 high school graduation exam score distribution
According to Dr. Khang, the 2025 high school graduation exam score distribution shows a very high level of differentiation, especially in natural science subjects. Compared to 2024, the 2025 high school graduation exam score distribution for each subject has different trends.
The average score for math was only 4.78 points - a sharp decrease compared to 6.45 in 2024; 56.4% of candidates scored below 5, indicating that the test was exceptionally difficult. However, the test was still well-classified with 513 10s, while in 2024 there were no 10s.
Physics has a better score distribution with an average score increasing to 6.99 and 3,929 10s. On the contrary, chemistry and biology both have a decrease in average scores. The number of candidates choosing to take these two subjects has decreased sharply, especially biology (down from more than 342,000 last year to nearly 70,000 candidates this year).
English has a strong differentiation with an average score of 5.38. The percentage of candidates scoring 7 or higher has dropped sharply from 25.2% in 2024 to only 15.1% this year - showing that the average score is not high but the group of candidates aiming for university admission is still "maintaining their form".
The social sciences block is more stable, with no major fluctuations in scores for history, geography, economic education and law.

University admission scores forecast to drop sharply for some traditional combinations
Forecasting university admission scores in 2025, Dr. Nguyen Tan Tran Minh Khang said that with fluctuations in score distribution, admission scores will have major changes in some traditional admission combinations.
For example, the combination of A00 (math, physics, chemistry) and A01 (math, physics, English), the sharp decrease in math scores will reduce the total admission scores of these two combinations. It is predicted that the admission scores of majors using the combination of A00 and A01 will decrease significantly, expected to be from 1-3 points depending on the major and school.

Group B00 (math, chemistry, biology) is the group that is most affected when all 3 subjects have a decrease in average score or the number of candidates with high scores is not much. It is predicted that the benchmark score of this group, especially the medical and pharmaceutical majors, will decrease sharply.
The D01 combination (math, literature, English) is similar to A01, the math score will be the main variable causing the D01 benchmark score to go down. It is predicted that the D01 benchmark score will decrease significantly, expected from 1 - 2.5 points.
What will be the standard score of Information Technology University?
According to Dr. Nguyen Tan Tran Minh Khang, the University of Information Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University) has the main admission combination including: A00 (math, physics, chemistry) and A01 (math, physics, English).
"Math is one of the three main pillars that make up the school's admission score. With the "shock" of math scores this year, when the average score of this subject dropped sharply from 6.45 (in 2024) to only 4.78 (in 2025), the average score of candidates applying to the school will certainly be deeply affected," Dr. Khang analyzed.

The Vice Principal of the University of Information Technology predicted: "The admission scores for the school's majors in 2025 will likely decrease compared to 2024. Although physics scores have increased, this increase is unlikely to compensate for the large drop in math scores. The expected decrease may range from 1-2.5 points depending on the major compared to last year."
However, this doctor noted that although the expected benchmark score is reduced, the information technology group is still an extremely attractive field of study and the number of candidates applying to the school is always very high. Therefore, the competition will still be very fierce and the benchmark scores of "hot" fields may decrease less than other fields such as artificial intelligence, data science, information security.
Feel free to adjust your wishes to increase your chances of being accepted.
However, Dr. Minh Khang said that candidates need to be calm and analyze carefully, low math scores are a common trend of the whole country, not a problem of any particular candidate. Universities will have to adjust the benchmark to match the general level. In addition, candidates should not only look at the absolute score but also refer to the percentile table to know what percentage of your score is in the top of the country in each subject, helping to assess your position more accurately.
"The sharp decrease in the score range of groups A, B, D shows that candidates can apply to majors/schools where the admission score was previously higher than the exam score. Be bold in adjusting your application to increase your chances of admission. In addition to high school graduation exam scores, candidates should take advantage of other admission methods in registering their application to increase their chances of admission to their favorite application," advised the Vice Principal of the University of Information Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University).
