In the early winter afternoon, the sky is clear, the gentle sunlight spreads golden light on the rice fields near the Ho Dynasty Citadel - a world cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO. Groups of tourists from all over come to Tay Do commune (Thanh Hoa province) to experience the unique buffalo cart service that has been "causing a fever" recently.

Mr. Nguyen Huu Duong (a tourist from Hanoi ) said that he was born and raised in the countryside of Thanh Hoa. After finishing university, he stayed in Hanoi to work and get married. Every time he returns to his hometown, he feels like he is reliving his childhood years.
“Sitting on the buffalo cart, you feel like you are back in the countryside with the creaking sound of the wheels, the steady footsteps of the buffalo, the sound of the wind blowing through the bamboo rows, the chirping of children calling each other in the distance... All of these create a special experience that is hard to find in other tourist destinations,” Mr. Duong shared.

Mr. Nguyen Van Long - Deputy Director of the Ho Dynasty Citadel Heritage Conservation Center said that tourists can experience many forms of sightseeing such as cycling, electric cars, etc. But the most popular is still riding a buffalo cart organized by households living around the heritage site.
The buffalo cart journey lasts about 30-45 minutes, taking visitors around the stone wall area, winding through rice fields and local trails.
According to Mr. Long, the highlight of the journey is the moment the buffalo cart stops at the ideal location for visitors to look towards the citadel gate and check-in. The green rice fields inside the citadel wall create a countryside picture that is both overwhelming and strangely peaceful.

“Not only does it bring income to the people, the buffalo cart service also contributes to promoting the image of the Ho Dynasty Citadel in a close, everyday way. If in the past, tourists mainly came to visit the heritage and then left, now they stay longer, explore rural life, enjoy specialties such as rice cakes, Lam tea, bamboo tube rice…
The combination of heritage tourism and community tourism is opening up a direction for sustainable development for the locality,” said Mr. Long.
