On August 14, the Portuguese National Statistics Institute (INE) released data showing that more than 8.8 million foreigners stayed in hotels nationwide during this period.
In June alone, nearly 2 million visitors entered Portugal, a new record, up 6.9% from a year earlier.
The accommodation sector welcomed more than 14 million visitors, including domestic visitors, recording revenue of nearly 2.8 billion euros in the first six months of this year, up 12.3% year-on-year, INE said.
The data also shows that the total number of overnight stays stood at 35.5 million. In June alone, Portugal saw strong growth with nearly 8 million overnight stays, generating a total revenue of 698 million euros.
In addition, the number of passengers entering Portugal through airports in June increased by 5.6% to 6.7 million compared to the previous year.
Tourism is a major driver of the Portuguese economy . Last year, the country attracted a record number of more than 18 million foreign tourists.
Total tourism revenue last year reached 43.7 billion euros ($48.2 billion), accounting for 16.5% of gross domestic product, contributing to half of the country's 2.3% economic growth, INE data showed.
