Golden Autumn Tourism: An Economic Lever for Sunchang, South Korea

Sunchang County, North Jeolla Province, South Korea, has seen a sharp increase in the number of tourists during the fall foliage season, creating a significant economic boost.

A report from the Sunchang County government released on December 1 said that during the peak period from October 24 to November 30, Gangcheonsan Mountain Park attracted about 169,000 visitors.

This number not only far exceeds the entire population of Sunchang County of 27,000 people, but is also considered a strong economic lever, contributing significantly to the county's revenue, from entrance tickets to the consumption of the region's typical agricultural products.

Realizing that the colorful foliage season is lasting longer than expected, the district authorities have extended the peak season by a week, instead of ending on November 23.

At the same time, many solutions have been deployed to optimize the experience and amenities for visitors, including free parking nearby and the operation of four 7-seat rail-free trains within the campus, making travel easier and more convenient.

In addition, during this tourist season, the local specialty sales area has recorded remarkable success.

Stalls have been promoting seasonal produce harvested in Sunchang such as chestnuts, persimmons, sweet potatoes, as well as premium mushrooms such as matsutake and shiitake mushrooms.

Total revenue from sales of these local products has exceeded 50 million won.

Sunchang County Governor Choi Young Il pledged to continue efforts to improve infrastructure and develop tourism content, including projects to improve access roads, add parking spaces, and upgrade the tourism information system.

The goal is to make Gangcheonsan Mountain Park not only an autumn destination but also a year-round tourist attraction, thereby strengthening links with the local economy.
