In the courtyard of Nguyen Huu Canh High School (Binh Tri Dong Ward, Ho Chi Minh City) during a sudden May rain shower, hundreds of students sat silently, captivated by war photographs and stories of the yearning for peace presented by the Ho Chi Minh City War Remnants Museum.

No longer confined to museum spaces, historical images and documents are now being brought directly to schools through traveling exhibitions.

This meaningful activity has been maintained for many years, contributing to helping students, teachers, and school staff supplement their historical knowledge, awaken their love for learning about national culture, foster a spirit of peace, and raise awareness of preserving and protecting the homeland.

19 topics that attract students

The familiar schoolyard has now become a special space where children can listen to stories of war, stories not only about loss but also about resilience, courage, and the yearning to live in peace.

Previously, students had to visit museums to access these materials, but now, with mobile exhibitions, historical heritage is brought closer to the younger generation. This approach also contributes to the innovation of history teaching and learning in a visual and experiential way.

With 19 fascinating themes, the museum offers diverse stories about history: today's soldiers, Vietnamese women's ao dai dresses through the flames of war, wartime children, war memories... Each theme serves as a reminder of the history, traditions, and resilient beauty of the Vietnamese people throughout the country's journey.

Even in the May days with their sudden showers and the lingering heat of summer, the students of Nguyen Huu Canh High School still sit neatly, attentively listening with eager eyes and open hearts.

Ngo Huynh Minh Chau, a student in class 11B11 at Nguyen Huu Canh High School (Binh Tri Dong ward), shared after visiting the exhibitions with two themes, "Vietnam's Seas and Islands" and "Aspiration for Peace": "The fact that the school allowed us to listen to presentations from the museum staff is a great opportunity for us to understand more about our nation's history."

Seeing and hearing firsthand what our ancestors went through has helped us appreciate the peace we have even more. We hope that exhibitions like this will be replicated so that young people like us can access them more easily."

A special history lesson

More than just extracurricular activities, these exhibitions have become emotionally enriching "open learning sessions" for many students.

"This class session is a special literature lesson, a valuable history lesson. Each story is not only for remembering but also for living with. The war is long over, but from those memories, each student today must learn to cherish the present, dedicate themselves to studying and training to continue writing beautiful chapters for the country."

"We believe that today's lessons will sow in the hearts of our students the seeds of gratitude, appreciation, and a spirit of continuous striving in their studies," shared a representative from Duong Van Thi High School (Tang Nhon Phu Ward).

Under the guidance of instructors, historical knowledge, which is often considered dry, becomes more accessible and relatable to students. This activity not only brings a fresh perspective to flag-raising ceremonies but also helps students broaden their understanding, cultivate national pride, and spread traditional cultural values.

The stories of war, mothers bidding farewell to their sons going to battle, and young soldiers falling for their country brought tears to the eyes of many students. Yet, interwoven within them was a powerful awakening of pride, gratitude, and love for their homeland. For the students, this was not just an exhibition, but also a profound lesson about "living beautifully, living responsibly, and living gratefully."

Instead of the traditional method of transporting students to historical sites and museums, the idea of "bringing museum space right under the school roof" is opening up a completely new and innovative approach to history.

In the final stretch of her last year of high school, Kim Ngoc (class 12C10, Nguyen Huu Canh High School) confided: "The packed study schedule to prepare for the important exam makes it very difficult for us to find time to go sightseeing outside."

The museum's proactive and flexible approach in bringing the exhibition right to our school grounds not only saved us time and money but also created a wonderful experiential space, making history lessons much more meaningful and easier to understand."

Museum for Peace

Ms. Dinh Ngoc Hang, Deputy Director of the War Remnants Museum, said that to date, the museum's exhibitions have traveled to almost all provinces and cities nationwide, reaching not only schools but also the general public thanks to close cooperation with cultural centers and partner organizations. Every year, the goal of bringing 20 mobile exhibitions to serve the public is consistently achieved, exceeding 100%.

"With the mission of 'Museum for Peace,' we hope to widely spread the value of peace to the younger generation. From there, we aim to awaken pride, raise awareness of preserving national traditions, and foster a shared responsibility in building the country," Ms. Hang said.
