Weak soil treatment at wharf area number 4

Terminal 4 to be completed in the second quarter of 2026

Wharf No. 4 is one of two key components of Wharf No. 4 & 5 cluster at Chan May port, which started construction at the end of 2024. At Wharf No. 4 construction site, the working atmosphere is quite urgent with activities such as drilling, piling, crane, excavating, compacting... Hundreds of workers take advantage of favorable weather to work day and night with the determination to bring the project to the finish line on time.

Mr. Tran Dinh Quoc, supervising engineer of Vsico Maritime Joint Stock Company, said that up to now, the wharf No. 4 project has completed about 40% of the plan; in which the contractor has completed 100% of the installation of temporary embankments and leveling the ground, treating weak soil; at the same time, the construction has driven 10% of the planned 500 piles in the wharf area, 270m long and 40m wide. Pile driving is an important technical item, expected to be completed synchronously in about 2 months to ensure a solid foundation for the above structures. At the same time, the items of pouring concrete for the wharf, installing cranes and offices, gates, fences, etc. are being deployed.

However, the construction progress of this wharf is facing difficulties, especially the ground infrastructure is obstructed by the oil pipeline of the Petroleum Port of Thua Thien Hue province (now Hue city) which is more than 80m long. This is an important infrastructure route, directly affecting the implementation of the construction of the breakwater and auxiliary technical areas.

Faced with the above situation, the city leaders have directed the relevant departments to take the initiative to resolve the problem. In particular, they proposed that the Vietnam National Petroleum Corporation urgently complete the adjustment and relocation of the wharf and the petroleum import pipeline that is affecting the site of wharf No. 4 of Chan May port. The leaders of the City Economic and Industrial Zones Management Board affirmed that this is a key task and will focus on implementing it so that the project does not fall behind schedule.

According to the leader of Vsico Maritime Joint Stock Company, with the initiative in organizing the construction, the unit is closely coordinating with the government and related units to remove infrastructure obstacles - the key factor helping the project of wharf No. 4 to achieve the set progress. "If the current pace and favorable weather are maintained, combined with active support from the locality, the project can completely reach the finish line in the second quarter of 2026 according to the set plan" - said the representative of Vsico Maritime Joint Stock Company.

Speed up the progress of wharf number 5

Compared to wharf No. 4, the progress of wharf No. 5 is currently slower. After half a year of construction, the project has only completed about 10% of the volume. This was predicted from the beginning in the construction schedule in accordance with actual conditions and implementation capacity.

Currently, wharf No. 5 is carrying out construction of the ground, piling and dredging the channel for the wharf. The total construction area of wharf No. 5 is 10.4 hectares. In addition, there is 2.4 hectares of water surface for the wharf area.

Engineer Tran Dinh Quoc said that according to the plan, wharf No. 5 will be completed in 2027. This timeline is enough to ensure safe, efficient and quality construction. When put into operation, this wharf will increase the total length of the wharf in Chan May area by 270m, better serving large cargo ships and cruise ships entering and leaving the port.

The investor is completing the necessary procedures and planning to coordinate the construction in sync with the progress of wharf No. 4. The biggest advantage is the sharing of common infrastructure between the two wharfs, such as the breakwater system, electricity, water, internal traffic and yard. When wharf No. 4 is completed, the construction conditions for wharf No. 5 will be much more favorable.

Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairman of the Hue City People's Committee Nguyen Van Phuong, during a recent survey trip to Chan May - Lang Co economic zone, said that the implementation of two terminals No. 4 & 5 is not only urgent in terms of exploitation capacity, but also represents a strategic step in the journey to bring Chan May Port to the national level according to the planning. Currently, with the rapidly increasing cargo output and the increasing number of international passenger ships, the port is facing overload pressure. Therefore, the completion of the two new terminals will relieve the pressure, while creating a strong momentum for the entire Chan May - Lang Co economic zone.

Hue City leaders have high expectations for these two projects. When completed, wharf clusters 4 & 5 will increase the cargo clearance capacity by about 5 million tons/year, bringing the total cargo throughput through Chan May Port to more than 10 million tons/year. Not only that, Chan May Port will be qualified to receive large container ships and cruise ships, making this area one of the important transit points for goods and tourists in the Central region and the country.

The project to build multi-purpose container terminals No. 4 & 5 at Chan May port is invested by Vsico Maritime Joint Stock Company (Hanoi). The project covers an area of over 26.3 hectares (including land and water surface), with a cost of over VND 2,614 billion. The contractor is a joint venture between Phu Quang Minh Consulting & Construction Joint Stock Company and Phuc Nam Company Limited. When completed, the project will contribute to improving the capacity to receive cargo ships with a capacity of up to 70,000 tons, while supporting the currently overloaded terminals No. 1, No. 2 & 3.
