Last Sunday, I had the opportunity to attend a themed performance aimed at fostering the development of An Giang's culture and people at Nguyen Trung Truc 1 High School in Rach Gia Ward. Among the many performances, I was particularly impressed by the performance of the school's traditional folk music club. After the performance, I chatted with the students, listening to many interesting stories about their journeys into traditional folk music. The first person I met was Duong Hong Sa, a student in class 10A5. Sa currently serves as the Vice President of the club. Sa shared that she came to traditional folk music out of a love for traditional art forms. “I was fortunate to receive dedicated guidance from Mr. Tran Van Ky – the head of the club – which gave me the opportunity to approach the subject in a more systematic way. The more I learned, the more passionate I became because each piece, each song, not only carries a sweet melody but also contains the beauty of culture, love for my homeland, and the unique emotional depth of Southern Vietnamese art,” Sa said.

After chatting for a while, Sa invited me to attend a club practice session with the traditional music artist Hoai Thu at the traditional room of Nguyen Trung Truc 1 High School. As I approached the room, I could hear the rhythmic tapping of the wooden clappers harmonizing with the sweet voice of artist Hoai Thu. Inside, Ms. Hoai Thu listened attentively, occasionally giving demonstrations and gently adjusting the rhythm and pronunciation for the students. Around her, the students sat neatly, attentively watching, some singing, some keeping the rhythm, and others humming along.

Student Khuu Minh Toan, from class 10A11, shared: “What makes me attached to traditional Southern Vietnamese folk music is that the lyrics and melodies not only contain the tunes, but also the feelings, thoughts, and even the sighs of our ancestors. For me, each song is like recounting a slice of life, helping listeners understand more about human relationships, love for their homeland, and old values.”

Nguyen Ngoc Han, a student in class 10A8, expressed: “My love for traditional Vietnamese folk music was nurtured by the lullabies my mother and grandmother sang in my childhood. Growing up with those sweet melodies has formed a special affection for this traditional art form.” Previously, Han had tried to learn about it through books and documents, but her access to information was still limited. Only when she became a student at Nguyen Trung Truc 1 High School and joined the club did she have the opportunity to learn systematically and using the right methods.

From the dedicated guidance of teacher Tran Van Ky to the instruction of artisans like Ms. Hoai Thu and Mr. Truong Dau, the members of the School's Traditional Music Club are becoming increasingly confident. Ms. Le Thi Nhieu (stage name Hoai Thu) said: “I am very happy and proud to see more and more young people loving traditional music. Seeing them passionately practicing, I believe this art form will be continued and preserved for a long time.”

As someone who accompanies the students on their journey to keep the love for traditional Vietnamese folk music alive, teacher Tran Van Ky said: “In the coming time, the club will continue to maintain regular activities, expand to attract more students to participate, strengthen exchanges with other units and clubs to learn from experience, and at the same time, invite artisans to guide the students so that they can learn more systematically. We will also create opportunities for the students to participate in performances at school and local activities, contributing to spreading the love for traditional Vietnamese folk music in schools.”
