Many students of Loc Binh High School, Lang Son , were picked up by their teachers to take their graduation exam after heavy rain caused landslides and washed away many bridges.
Over the past few days, Loc Binh district has been experiencing heavy rains, causing the water level of rivers and streams to rise, washing away or flooding bridges. Phuong Thi Hoai, class 12A9, Loc Binh High School, was anxious when the bridge over the stream near her house was submerged in floodwaters, making it impossible to cross to the other side, while there were only two days left for the high school graduation exam.
"My family and I are very worried. It has been raining all day so the water has not receded. The water is rising more and more. If we wait any longer, I will miss the exam," said Hoai, from Thong Nhat commune. She said she planned to go to school a few days earlier but before she could go, the heavy rain came.
Hoai said there are two ways to get to school from home: across the stream or take a detour along the railway. The detour is small, the rocks and soil are slippery and dangerous, so the student decided to ask her teachers for help.

Nong Thi Tam, class 12B, also cried when the exam day approached but she could not cross the Ky Cung river because the bridge was flooded. Tam's house is nearly 30 km from school and there is only one road to get there. Tam usually stays near school but a few days ago she went home to rest.
"I was afraid I wouldn't make it in time. The teachers called to ask about me and tried to help," said Tam, from Huu Lan commune.
According to Mr. Nguyen Phuong Nam, Secretary of the Youth Union of Loc Binh High School, Hoai and Tam are two of many students who were supported by the school to be taken to a safe place to stay before the graduation exam day. This year, Loc Binh High School has 437 candidates taking the exam, of which 121 have to stay in rented accommodation. Many students live dozens of kilometers away from school, the road is blocked by rocks and dirt, forcing them to cross rivers and streams.

On June 25 and 26, homeroom teachers contacted students to understand the situation and support those who were having difficulties. In Tam’s case, the school, together with local authorities and residents, built a temporary bridge to help him cross the river.
"When we learned that the students were stuck, the teachers at the school were very worried and tried every way to support the candidates as best as possible," said Mr. Nam.
For other students who live far away, teachers take turns picking them up and taking them to the accommodation arranged by the school. All students are picked up and dropped off and given free meals on exam days.
"On the morning of June 26, all students living far away were brought back to their boarding houses safely," Mr. Nam added.

Hoai and Tam were excited when their teachers came to pick them up. "I was so happy. I couldn't sleep until 2am, partly because I was happy that someone was picking me up, but also because I was afraid that the teacher wouldn't be able to come," Hoai said.
When they arrived, Tam was moved to see her homeroom teacher standing on the other side. In addition to clothes and books, their parents had also prepared some food for the exam.
"Now I feel more secure. I am grateful to the teachers and will try to do well on the exam," Tam said.
