Lao Cai is a mountainous province with 34 ethnic groups living together, with ethnic minorities accounting for 66% of the population. In recent years, preserving and promoting the traditional cultural identity of ethnic groups has become an important content in school education . In Cau Thia ward, schools not only teach knowledge from books and materials but have also proactively incorporated ethnic culture into extracurricular activities, helping students to better understand and appreciate traditional values.
In a lively and joyful atmosphere, on the school grounds, the Thai Xoe dance performed by teachers and students of Thach Luong Primary and Secondary School, Cau Thia ward, took place enthusiastically, attracting the participation of a large number of students.
“I really love the six traditional Xoe dances of our ethnic group. The school has included Xoe dance activities during recess, which I find very meaningful. We will work together to preserve our ethnic cultural identity and spread the beautiful values of Thai Xoe dance art,” shared Hoang Nhu Ngoc, class 8A.
Preserving national cultural traditions is one of the important educational contents, aiming to help students both absorb social progress and preserve and promote the beauty of traditional culture. Therefore, in addition to regular classes, Thach Luong Primary and Secondary School organizes extracurricular activities and group events to create a playground and build a friendly and healthy educational environment, helping students to deeply understand their national culture.
In addition, the school maintains performances of six traditional Xoe dances, incorporating folk songs, folk dances, and folk games into mid-session activities to teach students. This helps students interact, learn, and enhance their awareness of preserving and appreciating the traditional beauty of their own ethnic group, as well as other ethnic groups.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hiep, Principal of Thach Luong Primary and Secondary School, said: "The six traditional Xoe dances of the Thai ethnic group have been recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Since most of the students are from the Thai ethnic group, the school has maintained and promoted the Thai ethnic identity, incorporating the Xoe dance into extracurricular activities and experiential learning sessions; especially arranging mid-morning exercise sessions so that students can perform the traditional Xoe dance. Through these extracurricular activities, the school has helped students to love and understand the art of the traditional Xoe dance, thereby cherishing their ethnic identity."
Similar to Thach Luong Primary and Secondary School, at Thanh Luong Primary and Secondary School, along with extracurricular activities, the traditional cultural values of ethnic groups are integrated into classroom lessons.
Images of ethnic groups, customs, traditions, and cultural identities are incorporated into lessons in a vivid and relatable way, helping students to access and remember them, thereby fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the traditional values of their homeland.
Lessons on national cultural identity help me better understand my own culture and the cultures of other ethnic groups in the locality, thereby fostering a greater awareness of preserving and promoting traditional values.
Ms. Hoang Van Anh, a teacher at Thanh Luong Primary and Secondary School, shared: "During my teaching, I have integrated content about the cultures of ethnic groups into Literature lessons, experiential activities, and local education lessons. For each topic, I require students to record videos , take photos, and create clips to make comparisons, evaluations, and develop plans for preserving and conserving ethnic cultural identity."
In the 2025-2026 school year, Thanh Luong Primary and Secondary School will have 17 classes with 470 students, of which 95% are ethnic minority students.
To promote and preserve the cultural identity of ethnic groups, the school has focused on teaching and educating students about the cultural values and traditions of local ethnic groups by requiring them to wear traditional ethnic costumes on certain days of the week; integrating the teaching of historical and cultural relics, scenic spots, customs, traditions, festivals, and folk games into various subjects; and establishing ethnic minority cultural and artistic clubs in each class.
Mr. Dinh Trong Doan, Principal of Thanh Luong Primary and Secondary School, said: "The school will continue to promote and educate about preserving tangible and intangible cultural identity in the area through lessons. We will actively promote and introduce the beautiful traditions of the nation through festivals, customs, and practices to friends both domestically and internationally; at the same time, we will actively eliminate and criticize outdated customs."
Through practical activities, schools in the province in general and Cau Thia ward in particular are gradually spreading awareness of preserving traditional culture in the school environment, creating valuable assets for the younger generation to confidently step into the future.
