Germany excludes Chinese companies from building 6G network

(CLO) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that Chinese suppliers, typically Huawei, will be excluded from building the country's 6G network.

“We have decided in the cabinet that wherever possible we will replace components, for example in the 5G network, with components that we produce ourselves. And we will not allow any components from China in the 6G network,” Chancellor Merz said at a business conference in Berlin on November 13.

Germany’s decision reflects growing concerns in Europe about its dependence on foreign technology, with the continent worried about its dependence on everything from Asian semiconductors to artificial intelligence (AI) and U.S. cloud computing infrastructure, especially as geopolitical and trade tensions threaten vital supply chains.

Last year, Germany ordered telecom operators to remove Huawei equipment from their core networks, citing national security risks. Berlin is now considering using public funds to pay carriers like Deutsche Telekom AG and other domestic firms to remove Chinese equipment, Bloomberg reported last month.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he would raise the issue at a digital sovereignty summit with French President Emmanuel Macron next week.

“We will discuss with the industry what we can do, not only to make ourselves independent from China, but also independent, for example, from the United States, independent from the big tech companies,” Mr. Merz stressed.

However, the center-right leader also ruled out a complete decoupling from China, which is Germany’s second-largest trading partner. “We cannot do that,” he said. “China cannot do that, but it is even more difficult for us.”
