On September 14, Germany held Nationaler Warntag Day to test the effectiveness of the national warning system in case of emergencies such as terrorism, fires, natural disasters, etc.
At exactly 11:00 a.m. (4:00 p.m. Vietnam time), all sirens across the country sounded simultaneously and the MoWaS electronic alarm system sent alarm signals to radio and television broadcasting facilities, electronic boards, and screens in public places...
In addition to warnings via radio, television or displayed on billboards in public places, alarm bells will be activated on mobile phones and sirens will sound on a certain frequency via Cell Broadcast.
This means that every citizen receives an alert on their mobile phone, even if they are not registered or their phone is on silent mode.
Even tourists and people with foreign mobile phone numbers currently in Germany are being alerted.
Except for very old mobile devices or devices that have not been updated to the new operating system, they may not receive the warning.
With National Alert Day , the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK), an agency of the German Federal Ministry of the Interior , wanted to find out how many people could be contacted in an emergency.
An online survey by BBK, expected to be released in the coming days, will help find out how many people have been exposed to the alert and through what channels.
Germany tests its warning channels once a year, on the second Thursday in September. Last year's warning day, some people were worried because they couldn't hear any sirens from their devices.
Sirens across Germany were dismantled or not replaced in many places after the end of the Cold War.
However, the government is working to increase the number of sirens nationwide from the current minimum of 38,000.
During the first “National Alert Day” in 2020, there were many incidents that caused the warning from BBK to be delayed by 30 minutes. The following years, the national alert day was much more successful./.
