According to the Frankfurt Panorama newspaper on February 4, sources from the German government said that Berlin and Kiev could finalize an agreement on bilateral security guarantees at the Munich Security Conference on February 16.
Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna, in charge of EU-NATO integration, said that a draft agreement had been prepared, and although the text had not been fully agreed upon, “it is ready in many respects.” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky agreed in a phone call to accelerate negotiations on bilateral security commitments and support measures, according to German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit.
Germany is the fifth country with which Ukraine has negotiated a bilateral security agreement. In mid-January, Ukraine and the UK signed a 10-year security cooperation agreement, under which London pledged to support Kiev during this period. French President Emmanuel Macron has announced his intention to sign a similar agreement with Ukraine. President Macron said he would travel to Ukraine this month to finalize a bilateral security agreement, under which Paris would provide the country with more sophisticated weapons, including long-range cruise missiles.
