Using technology to support teaching

Báo Đại Đoàn KếtBáo Đại Đoàn Kết14/12/2024

While 20% of teachers say they regularly use technology in teaching, a nearly similar percentage have never or rarely applied it. This leads the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences to ask: How can artificial intelligence be applied to learning in a rational and controlled manner by schools and instructors?

A research team from the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences conducted a nationwide survey of over 5,000 teachers and 130,000 primary and secondary school students. The results revealed a disparity in the level of access to and skills in technology between the two groups. Specifically, over 20% of surveyed teachers reported regularly accessing and using technology to support their teaching, while 15% had never or rarely used it. Furthermore, nearly 50% of teachers, primarily in disadvantaged areas, stated they lacked access to digital teaching materials. 39% of secondary schools had not yet developed digital resources.

According to Mr. Le Anh Vinh, Director of the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences, these figures show that while we have made many improvements in infrastructure and human resources, many obstacles remain in implementing digital transformation. The project to strengthen the application of information technology and digital transformation in education and training, giai đoạn 2022-2025, with a vision to 2030, aims to significantly innovate the methods of organizing education by 2025, making teaching and learning in a digital environment an essential, daily activity for every teacher and learner.

Experts have pointed out that the trend in education in the digital age cannot be separated from the application of digital technology with teaching support tools to make both teachers and learners more proactive. Instead of being confined to textbooks and what is taught in class by teachers, learners in the digital age can access knowledge from many different sources, depending on their needs and experience. Teachers also need to be aware that teaching and learning today is extremely mobile and flexible, encompassing classroom learning, online learning, laboratory learning, field experiments, internships at factories and businesses, individual self-study, and group work. Therefore, the widespread application of modern science and technology in teaching and learning is essential.

Dr. Bui Hai Hung, General Director of VinAI Artificial Intelligence Research and Application Joint Stock Company, believes that artificial intelligence (AI) is a tool that will become increasingly familiar to us, helping to increase labor productivity, improve access to information, and generate new knowledge. Similarly, Chatboxes, ChatGPT, and other AI-powered image generation tools will become increasingly common in people's lives. The question is how to utilize it rationally and effectively.

For example, current AI systems not only solve common math problems at the high school or freshman university level, but can even explain why a particular solution is used. This means that AI systems can now completely become tutors for young people.

Mr. Hung believes that if students are truly passionate, they can use systems like ChatGPT to easily and comprehensively self-study high school math and first-year university math. This would also benefit students in remote areas, allowing them to use AI-powered systems for self-learning without relying on teachers. However, for this learning to be effective, proper management and organization are necessary.

In that context, the role of the teacher or lecturer will be to guide and inspire, and the lectures must be well-structured. The curriculum is crucial, determining what to teach first and what to teach later, and teachers will help students understand whether they are truly grasping the concepts or simply copying solutions without fully comprehending them.

To prepare for the application of AI in daily life, Mr. Bui Hai Hung believes that the first step is to invest both time and money, and to involve many stakeholders, including the government, schools, and society as a whole. Once the whole society is determined, everything becomes simpler.
