Review security camera video of the incident Dang Chi Thanh Thanh repeatedly threw violent punches and kicks at a young woman in front of her young child in the lobby of Sky Central apartment building (176 Dinh Cong, Phuong Liet ward, Hanoi ). Many people were outraged not only because of Thanh's thuggish behavior, but also because of the indifferent attitude of many witnesses.
Not only did the weak dare not intervene, but a young man in a red shirt looked out the door and saw the incident and quickly went back inside the house. The reaction of the security guard was also weak, holding Thanh and the victim's hands but still could not stop the thug. After a while, 3 more security guards slowly stepped forward to intervene in a very formal way. In the surrounding crowd, many people appeared almost just to listen to the story.
Dang Chi Thanh was detained for investigation, and it is indisputable that he had to pay the price. What is heartbreaking and difficult to understand is the indifference of a large number of people who stood by and watched a woman being beaten by a strong man. Compared to Thanh and his wife, it is clear that the residents and security guards have the advantage in both justice and force, and could have stood up to stop the man strongly, resolutely, and controlled him if he did not stop.
If everyone around clearly showed an attitude of protecting the woman and not letting the beating happen, Thanh would not dare, or even if he did, he would not be able to touch the victim.
They might justify: " I didn't intervene because I was afraid of getting caught up in the mess, afraid of retaliation", "There was security", "I don't know who was right and who was wrong"... But it was all just an excuse. The only right thing to do was to stop the attack and protect the victim, and in this case they were well within their means to do so.
From the indifferent attitude clearly shown in the clip, it can only be said that it is apathy - standing outside the pain of others, choosing to remain silent or turn a blind eye to injustice and violence.
This is a tacit acceptance of the evil to continue, because in a situation of public violence, every second of hesitation means another punch or kick to the victim. Standing by and watching or weakly trying to stop it "just for show" is actually helping the perpetrator, causing more damage to the victim.
The “it’s none of my business” mentality and the excuse-making style of fear of retaliation, believing that someone else will intervene… create a “passive crowd effect”. When everyone thinks someone else will intervene, in the end, no one does anything.
In apartment buildings, many residents are used to "living next to each other but like strangers". People communicate little, observe a lot but intervene very little, especially in risky situations. The mentality of creating a safe shell for oneself inadvertently becomes a shield to protect the violent person.
Bystanders cannot be considered completely innocent. When someone is beaten right in front of you, especially a young woman brutally attacked in front of her children, silence is no longer neutrality. It is passive complicity.
What kind of community do we want to live in? A safe community does not rely solely on cameras or security guards, but must be built on the foundation of people willing to protect each other. When a person is attacked in public while dozens of pairs of eyes calmly observe, it is an alarm bell about the degradation of community morality.
If today we ignore it because "it's not our business", then tomorrow, when we or our loved ones are abused, who will step in to help?
In the incident at Sky Central on the evening of August 9, in addition to strictly handling the violent person, each person also needs to look back at themselves: Will we choose to be the one who intervenes, or the one who watches? Because sometimes, between good and evil there is only a very fragile boundary, depending on the actions in the specific situation. Indifference is the fastest way for that boundary to be erased.
