'Don't confuse your starting point with your potential'

Honored as a patriotic emulation model of Ho Chi Minh City in the period 2020 - 2025, Sam Pi Dieu made a strong impression with his 'huge' achievements in international scientific publications and AI awards.

This first-year student majoring in computer science at the University of Natural Sciences in Ho Chi Minh City also has a profound philosophy of life and dedication: volunteering with high expertise, using technology to solve practical problems of the country, bringing benefits to the community.

From "fun-loving" to technology projects for the community

Sam Pi Dieu's journey with technology began with a student's curiosity when in 7th grade, he accidentally saw "that guy sitting there coding Pascal. He was typing on the teacher's computer, I thought he was fixing the computer for her". When he learned that it was an IT assignment for students, Dieu found it interesting and asked the teacher to let him learn. Then his passion grew, leading him to the 9th grade IT team, starting to get acquainted with the C++ computer language and has been studying IT ever since.

Unlike many of her peers who followed the purely "competitive programming" path, Dieu soon turned to her own path of application programming. Dieu shared that she always wanted to do something to contribute effectively to society, in addition to just learning knowledge.

It was also this "fun-loving" and exploratory spirit that brought Dieu to the Union - Association activities. The young man honestly shared: "In 6th and 7th grade, I just went to school and then came home, so I was quite bored. So when I signed up to join the ceremonial teams, the drum and trumpet teams, or helped teachers fold the weekly newspaper, I felt happy. Joining the Union - Association allows me to meet more people, connect with other seniors, participate in many new movements and playgrounds."

One of those opportunities was the Ho Chi Minh City AI Challenge, where Dieu won both first and second prizes for two consecutive years. This was also the stepping stone for Dieu’s first international scientific publication.

After the competition, the Organizing Committee and the Professional Council introduced Dieu and her team to develop the topic and submit a scientific article. The result was a proceedings article published in a Scopus Q4 ranked journal.

When asked about the meaning of this project, Dieu explained in a very intuitive way: "Everyone, imagine we have a very long video , for example a street camera video lasting several hours to several days, and now the traffic police want to find an accident. In the traditional way, people will have to watch and find it themselves, which is very time-consuming."

Dieu's research solves exactly that problem. "We built a system that is like an online meeting room dedicated to video search. Here, many people can search at the same time and when one person finds an important video, the result will immediately appear on everyone else's screen," he explained.

The special feature is that the system operates in "real time" thanks to WebSocket technology, like "a continuous hotline". This topic can be applied immediately to TV stations, reporters searching for documents or supporting traffic police in checking surveillance cameras, increasing the search speed many times.

Not stopping there, Dieu is also nurturing a new project within the framework of the "Green Seed Courage" Journey contest of the University of Natural Sciences, Ho Chi Minh City. Dieu and her team are researching and making a model of "interactive TVC game to propagate the law".

Realizing that TVC screens in elevators or waiting areas often only show repetitive advertisements, Dieu's team wanted to turn them into an interactive game, where viewers can answer questions about legal situations (such as laws on traffic, youth, elections of National Assembly and People's Council deputies at all levels, etc.). The goal is to "bring the law closer to young people", instead of young people having to proactively learn about a field that is often considered dry.

There is always a mountain higher than the mountain.

From his initial curiosity, Sam Pi Dieu has been consistent with the goal of using technology to create products that can be applied to the community. Thus, Dieu's list of achievements grows longer every day: Certificates of Merit from the Central Youth Union, Ho Chi Minh City Youth Union, Ministry of Education and Training, Creative Youth Badge and most recently, the title of Ho Chi Minh City Young Talent in 2024.

To be able to maintain academic performance, do scientific research, and participate in Youth Union activities, Dieu's secret lies in arranging time and adhering to iron discipline in planning. Dieu shared: "I check to see if the organization time overlaps with my midterm and final exam schedule. And I determined that although I do not participate in all activities, when I participate, it must be of quality." Dieu always makes detailed plans and prepares early to "avoid piling work and deadlines near the end" with the mindset that "the political task of students, the most important responsibility is still studying at school".

When asked about her motivation to compete, Dieu has a very interesting perspective, which is to regularly follow the achievements of her older siblings and friends. "I often see older siblings, friends, or even younger siblings achieving remarkable achievements. I watch whoever is honored or has a title and use that as motivation to try harder. I always think "there is always a higher mountain", so I always look for better people to learn from and strive to follow", Dieu shared.

Dieu's vision does not stop at conquering competitions. The young man has a clear orientation on applying artificial intelligence (AI) into practice in Vietnam. One is in the medical and biomedical fields, where AI can assist doctors in diagnosing diseases. The second is in the technological aspect, Dieu wants to solve the big problem today: "Most devices that run AI require very powerful hardware, so I hope to be able to develop AI models that operate on compact devices, to bring the benefits of technology to more people."

Summarizing her journey, Dieu sincerely shared: "Never confuse your starting point with your potential. Everyone should start from the smallest things, from exercises, class projects..., don't be afraid to try to know how far you can go."

Sam Pi Dieu is one of 478 typical advanced examples in the patriotic emulation movement for the period 2020 - 2025 of Ho Chi Minh City and is a member of the city's delegation to attend the 11th Patriotic Emulation Congress next December.
