The key to sustainable pesticide management lies in making a variety of solutions and tools available to farmers.

This is one of the key initiatives implemented by CropLife since 2021 to support and promote the implementation of the International Code of Conduct for Pesticides (ICoC).

In 2024, the program made significant progress in expanding its reach to Guatemala and Chile, marking its presence in Latin America. At the same time, the program fulfilled its initial implementation vision by selecting Indonesia and Colombia as the final two participating countries, bringing the total to nine countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. This annual report documents the progress made in 2024 in Kenya, Morocco, Egypt, Thailand, Vietnam, Chile and Guatemala.

Through the SPMF, CropLife International members have committed $13 million to promote sustainable pesticide use and management, with a focus on low- and middle-income countries in the Global South. The program aims to help farmers access innovations that expand their “farming toolkit” to adapt to climate change stresses, while supporting sustainable transitions that are appropriate to local production and economic conditions.

In Vietnam, SPMF is entering its second year of implementation within the framework of a five-year cooperation (2023–2028) between the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection (DPPPP), the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MARD) and CropLife Asia. In 2024, the program recorded many outstanding results such as organizing the first international conference on pesticide packaging management with more than 120 experts attending; organizing a dialogue conference on EPR between the DPPPP, the EPR office and relevant partners within the framework of the International Conference on Pesticide Packaging Management; coordinating the organization of training courses and granting drone operation certificates to more than 30 testing officers; maintaining the third year of the training program on safe pesticide use in Dong Thap; and developing an online training platform for farmers and agents. Many technical cooperation activities were also promoted, including policy review, sharing of international experiences and communication to raise public awareness.

Speaking at the signing ceremony of the cooperation plan for 2025, Mr. Dang Van Bao - Chairman of CropLife Vietnam Association emphasized: "The joint efforts and shared responsibilities between the public and private sectors in building an effective pesticide management and use ecosystem will create a solid foundation for the sustainable development of the agricultural sector, ensuring harmonious and long-term benefits for farmers and businesses, as well as meeting consumer expectations for safe and quality agricultural products. Based on the good results recorded from the cooperation program in 2024, we are very pleased and appreciate the effective support and assistance of the leaders of the Ministry and the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection for the proposals and activities of CropLife Vietnam, and at the same time reaffirm the commitments to accompany and support management units in implementing the common vision of developing a responsible agriculture , integrating multi-values, ensuring food security and protecting the ecological environment".

“The key to sustainable pesticide management lies in providing farmers with easy access to a range of solutions and tools, especially in an increasingly challenging production environment,” said Emily Rees, President and CEO of CropLife International, in a statement on the release of the report. “Public-private partnerships, with strong government support, will help to realise this vision.”

“In 2024, our member companies reaffirmed their commitment to the International Code of Conduct for Pesticide Management. The SPMF is a concrete demonstration of that commitment. I am extremely proud to be part of this initiative – a program that has the depth and long-term vision to deliver sustainable and systematic progress.”

Highlighting the programme’s multi-stakeholder approach, Ms Rees expressed her sincere thanks to the partners and governments in each country who have contributed to the realisation of practical changes, contributing to the development of replicable models for the application of best practices.

With a global vision and positive results recorded in 2024, the SPMF program is gradually affirming its role as a sustainable platform to realize commitments to responsible pesticide management, support farmers in accessing progressive farming methods and contribute practically to the goal of sustainable agricultural development globally.
