Roads and houses devastated by landslides in Kien Giang

VnExpressVnExpress11/04/2024

The damaged road is located along the canal, which was upgraded early last year. Up to now, there have been nearly a dozen landslides on the road, and the canal has dried up, making it difficult for people to transport rice and agricultural products.

According to Kien Giang authorities, landslides in the area recently were caused by hot weather and drought, and people took advantage of the situation to pump water into the fields, causing the local canal system to dry up. This situation caused a large difference in height between the riverside road surface and the water level below the canal, leading to land subsidence. In addition, extensive dredging made the bottom of the canals quite deep (about 5 m), and the weak ground in the area was also the cause of the increased incidents.
