Enrique and Arteta made history in the Champions League. |
For the first time in the tournament's history, two Spanish coaches, Luis Enrique and Mikel Arteta, faced each other directly in the final. Despite the absence of a La Liga representative, those involved in Spanish football still exerted a significant influence on the coaching benches.
For Enrique, this is an opportunity to further solidify his position in European coaching. The former Barcelona coach is aiming for his third Champions League title, and his second consecutive title with PSG.
On the opposite side, Arteta has the opportunity to achieve something unprecedented with Arsenal: bringing home the club's first ever Champions League trophy. The Gunners came very close to glory under Arsene Wenger, with a golden generation led by Thierry Henry, but ultimately succumbed to Barcelona in the 2006 final.
Before Enrique and Arteta, the Champions League had seen matches between coaches from the same country in the final. The first was in 2003, when Carlo Ancelotti faced Marcello Lippi in the final between AC Milan and Juventus.
In 2013, Jupp Heynckes led Bayern Munich against Jurgen Klopp's Dortmund. More recently, in 2020, two other German coaches also faced each other in the final: Hansi Flick and Thomas Tuchel, when Bayern played PSG.
Enrique and Arteta promise to create a fascinating tactical battle between two clubs with contrasting playing styles this season.
