After withdrawing Indonesia's hosting rights for the 2023 U20 World Cup , the FIFA delegation met with the Argentine Football Association (AFA) yesterday (April 10) to survey competition venues and facilities before officially announcing the official host of the 2023 U20 World Cup.
The FIFA delegation began work from April 10 to April 16 to identify six venues for the tournament. The two stadiums most likely to be eliminated from the list of proposals are in the cities of Salta and Resistencia.
Argentina U20 will get a default spot at the U20 World Cup
According to Argentine media, the 8 stadiums proposed by AFA include: Diego Armando Maradona (La Plata), San Juan del Bicentenario (San Juan), Malvinas Argentinas (Mendoza), Mario Alberto Kempes (Cordoba), Unico Madre de Ciudades (Santiago del Estero), Unico de Villa Mercedes (San Luis), Padre Ernesto Martearena (Salta), Centenario (Resistencia).
The official announcement of the host will be made after the FIFA delegation completes its work. The draw is expected to take place on April 21, with the competition still taking place from May 20 to June 11.
As the host of the U20 World Cup, Argentina's U20 team will be given a default spot. According to Argentine media, the U20 team will once again compete under the guidance of Javier Mascherano.
Previously, the former Argentina international led the Argentina U20 team to participate in the U20 World Cup qualifiers but lost to Paraguay, Brazil, Colombia and only had 1 victory against Peru in the South American U20 tournament (CONMEBOL U20) in January 2023.
The U20 World Cup has 24 participating teams including: Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador, England, France, Italy, Israel, Slovakia, South Korea, Japan, Uzbekistan, New Zealand, Iraq, Fiji, Gambia, Senegal, Tunisia, Nigeria, United States, Honduras, Guatemala, Dominican Republic and host Argentina.
The 24 teams will be divided into six groups, with the top two teams and the four best third-placed teams advancing to the round of 16.
