According to a report by the General Statistics Office ( Ministry of Finance ), foreign direct investment (FDI) implemented in Vietnam in January was estimated at US$1.68 billion, an increase of 11.3% compared to the same period last year, and also the highest amount of FDI implemented in January in the past 5 years.
Of the $1.68 billion in realized FDI in Vietnam in January, the manufacturing sector accounted for $1.39 billion, representing 82.5% of the total realized foreign direct investment. Real estate business activities reached $110.2 million, accounting for 6.6%; and the production and distribution of electricity, gas, hot water, steam and air conditioning reached $66.6 million, accounting for 4%.
The continued growth in FDI disbursement shows that the investment environment in Vietnam is favorable, enabling foreign investors to quickly implement projects.

However, the total registered foreign direct investment (FDI) in Vietnam as of January 31st, including newly registered capital, adjusted registered capital, and the value of capital contributions and share purchases by foreign investors, reached US$2.58 billion, a decrease of 40.6% compared to the same period last year.
Regarding newly registered capital, 349 projects were licensed with a registered capital of US$1.49 billion, an increase of 23.8% compared to the same period last year in terms of the number of projects and a 15.7% increase in registered capital.
The manufacturing and processing industry received the largest amount of newly licensed foreign direct investment with registered capital reaching US$1.05 billion, accounting for 70.8% of the total newly registered capital; real estate business activities reached US$243.2 million, accounting for 16.3%; and other sectors accounted for US$191.4 million, or 12.9%.
The General Statistics Office further stated that among the 35 countries and territories with newly licensed investment projects in Vietnam in January, Singapore was the largest investor with US$906.1 million, accounting for 60.9% of the total newly registered capital; followed by China with US$169.6 million, accounting for 11.4%; Japan with US$140.8 million, accounting for 9.5%; the United States with US$85.5 million, accounting for 5.7%; Hong Kong (China) with US$66.1 million, accounting for 4.4%; South Korea with US$48.3 million, accounting for 3.2%; and the Netherlands with US$32.3 million, accounting for 2.2%.
Regarding adjusted registered capital, 91 projects licensed in previous years registered an increase in investment capital totaling $888.5 million, a decrease of 67.4% compared to the same period last year.
Including both newly registered capital and adjusted registered capital of projects licensed in previous years, foreign direct investment registered in the processing and manufacturing industry reached US$1.88 billion, accounting for 79.2% of the total newly registered and increased capital; real estate business activities reached US$245.5 million, accounting for 10.3%; and other sectors reached US$248.3 million, accounting for 10.5%.
According to a representative from the General Statistics Office, there were 265 registered capital contributions and share purchases by foreign investors, totaling US$198.4 million, a decrease of 38.6% compared to the same period last year. Of these, 78 transactions involved increasing the charter capital of businesses , with a value of US$67.0 million, and 187 transactions involved foreign investors acquiring domestic shares without increasing charter capital, with a value of US$131.4 million.
Regarding foreign investors' capital contributions and share purchases, investment in the processing and manufacturing industry reached US$81.2 million, accounting for 40.9% of the total capital contribution; professional, scientific and technological activities reached US$45.7 million, accounting for 23.1%; and the remaining sectors accounted for US$71.4 million, or 36.0%.
