Nearly 2.2 million disabled children need comprehensive care

Supporting children with disabilities is not only about health care, but activities need to aim at comprehensive care, from rehabilitation therapy to community integration support and career guidance.

On the afternoon of November 28, at the Academy of Journalism and Communication, the Vietnam Association for the Relief of Disabled Children and Children's Health magazine held a launching ceremony for the program For Children's Smiles, the writing contest For Children's Smiles and the program Nurturing Kindness in 2025.

The event has profound humanitarian significance, aiming at the goal of accompanying the care and protection of children, especially nearly 2.2 million disabled children and millions of children in special circumstances across the country.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Mr. Ngo Sach Thuc - member of the Presidium of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front , Chairman of the Vietnam Association for the Relief of Disabled Children - said that the Association always strives with the highest goal of helping disabled children to be protected, cared for and integrated equally in accordance with the Law on Children, the Law on Persons with Disabilities and the International Convention on the Rights of the Child.

He emphasized that a series of practical activities have been implemented to help disabled children such as treatment costs, rehabilitation therapy, community integration support, career guidance, etc. with specific addresses and goals.

The "charity ambassadors" have been present in many remote areas, connecting the spirit of mutual love to the most difficult places.

"After receiving timely support, some disabled children have now become teachers, officials, and businessmen. Those stories have inspired and shown the children's determination," Mr. Thuc shared.

Mr. Tran Doan Tien, Editor-in-Chief of Children's Health magazine, said that currently the whole country has nearly 4 million children in special circumstances, including 2.2 million disabled children.

Despite strong support from the State, resources are still limited; many care, treatment and surgery programs still need contributions from the community.

Mr. Tien said that right after the launching ceremony, the organizing committee will deploy emergency support activities for children in four provinces and cities that are heavily affected by storms and floods.

At the same time, the Incubation of Kindness program will also mobilize resources from the community, businesses, hospitals, pharmacies, etc. to care for disabled children in provinces and cities.

The For Children's Smiles 2025 project, the For Children's Smiles writing contest and the Nurturing Kindness program will be a series of activities aimed at creating more motivation, material and spiritual resources for disabled children to overcome difficulties, integrate into the community and have a better future.

At the same time, promote communication on children's rights, disseminate the Law on Children, the Law on Persons with Disabilities, the International Convention on the Rights of the Child; seek initiatives and propose solutions to care for children with disabilities in the coming time.

The contest also honors groups and individuals who have made lasting contributions to child care.
