Ford's latest recall involves 694,271 vehicles, including 2021-2024 Ford Bronco Sport and 2020-2022 Escape models, all of which use the 1.5-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost turbocharged engine, a type of engine that has been repeatedly reported for technical defects.
This is the third time Ford has recalled vehicles for fuel injector defects, extending a series of technical scandals that have lasted since 2022. In the latest announcement, Ford said the fuel injectors could crack, causing fuel to leak into the engine compartment, a potential fire hazard if not detected promptly.

Ford estimates it will spend around $570 million to address the recall. The American automaker does not yet have a complete technical solution to replace the faulty injectors, but will upgrade the engine control software. This update will help the electronic system detect fuel leaks early and warn the driver through the instrument cluster.
Customers can visit their Ford or Lincoln dealership to have the software installed for free. This temporary solution also applies to vehicles that have been recalled in previous campaigns.
Ford first acknowledged the injector problem in November 2022, when it recalled more than 520,000 vehicles for fuel leaks. At that time, the company only updated the software and added an additional hose to direct the leaking fuel away from the engine area.

However, by March 2024, Ford continued to expand the recall to more than 42,000 vehicles. By March 2025, an additional 33,000 vehicles were included in the recall due to improper repairs. These measures were considered temporary and did not address the root cause.
In response to growing consumer and media complaints, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched a comprehensive investigation in April 2025 into Ford's handling of previous recalls.
According to NHTSA, Ford did not proactively replace the faulty injectors, but only provided a temporary fix. The results of this investigation are the reason why the company has expanded the recall for the third time, including the recently launched 2024 Bronco Sport models.

Despite the magnitude of the recall, Ford said only about 0.3% of the affected vehicles were actually at risk. The company has discontinued the injectors in the Escape from December 2022 and the Bronco Sport from February 2024, replacing them with improved parts.
However, the fact that recalls are still occurring in 2025 raises big questions about product quality control as well as Ford's technical response to serious errors.
