Indonesia is one of Vietnam's traditional and key rice import markets. The Ministry of Industry and Trade said that Indonesia will import 2 million tons of rice for national reserves in 2023. This opens up a very good opportunity for Vietnamese rice exporting enterprises.
According to statistics from Vietnam Customs, in the first two months of 2023, Indonesia was Vietnam's third largest rice import market after the Philippines and China. Vietnam's rice exports to Indonesia in the first two months of 2023 reached 143,786 tons, equivalent to 67.31 million USD, with an average price of 468 USD/ton, a sharp increase of 33.732% in volume and 30.355% in turnover but a decrease of 10% in price compared to the same period in 2022, accounting for 16% of the total volume and 14.3% of the total rice export turnover of the country.
According to the Import-Export Department, Ministry of Industry and Trade , the Indonesian Government has decided to import 2 million tons of national rice reserves in 2023, of which 500,000 tons will be implemented as soon as possible to ensure food security. According to the Indonesian Government, the imported national rice reserves will be used for the rice price stabilization program, rice support for 21.53 million poor households and for other purposes. Regarding the national rice reserves in 2023 in Indonesia, information from the Import-Export Department also said that although it is in the main harvest season, the domestic rice reserve purchase situation in Indonesia is facing many difficulties. Currently, the Indonesian reserve agency has only purchased 60,000 tons while the amount of rice reserves in the warehouse (as of March 25, 2023) is only about 280 thousand tons. Meanwhile, retail rice prices in the Indonesian domestic market in March 2023 are still on an upward trend. According to statistics from the Indonesian Food Price Information Center, from March 1 to 20, the average retail price of low-grade rice increased by 1.24%; medium-grade rice increased by 0.38%.
Experts said that the difficulty in purchasing stems from the scarcity of domestic supply, lower-than-expected rice harvest due to the impact of heavy rains in the first months of 2023, and inaccurate statistics on cultivated area. In response to demand signals from key markets such as Indonesia, the Import-Export Department recommends that rice exporters proactively monitor the market situation closely, fully assess opportunities and risks to develop transaction plans, sign appropriate contracts, ensure export efficiency and contribute to consuming all rice and paddy products for farmers at favorable prices. In addition, it is necessary to pay attention to plans to prevent risks related to prices, payment and delivery in the context of the world trade situation being affected by many impacts. In addition, the Import-Export Department recommends that rice export traders regularly update the situation to the Vietnam Food Association and the Ministry of Industry and Trade to serve the management of rice export business activities as well as promptly take measures to support traders.
