At 9:00 p.m. on September 16, NNA was taken to Ha Tinh General Hospital by her family in a state of crying, difficulty swallowing, and severe throat pain.
Through examination and consultation, the doctors determined that child A had a foreign object, a coin, stuck in the upper esophageal sphincter, very close to the airway.
Doctors performed endoscopy to remove the coin.
After that, the pediatrician removed the coin for child A. Now the child is stable and the sore throat is gone.
Doctor Le Cong Minh (Department of Pediatrics - Provincial General Hospital) said that if the foreign object was not removed by endoscopy in time, the health of the girl NNA could have deteriorated because the foreign object, such as a metal coin, would have been difficult to get out of the body naturally. Currently, patient NNA is stable and her sore throat has gone away.
Coin removed from 5-year-old girl's esophagus.
To reduce the risk of choking on foreign objects in children, Dr. Minh recommends to parents: Do not let children play with small, fragile toys and always keep an eye on children when they are playing; objects that children can easily swallow such as: coins, small batteries, buttons, marbles, screws, pins, small magnets... In particular, when discovering that a child has swallowed a foreign object, it is necessary to take the child to the nearest medical facility for timely treatment. Do not arbitrarily treat the child at home or treat with folk remedies, which will make the disease more complicated and dangerous to health.
