On this occasion, domestic and international scientists had reporting sessions on topics such as blood transfusion, stem cells, blood coagulation, thalassemia, immunity - genetics - molecular biology...
Reporting at the conference, Dr. Vo Thi Thanh Binh, Head of the Stem Cell Transplantation Department, National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, said that stem cell transplantation is a highly effective treatment method for patients with bone marrow failure. The graft growth rate on the 30th day after transplantation reached 100%; the estimated overall survival rate and disease-free survival rate 5 years after transplantation were 84.8% and 91%, respectively (for patients with bone marrow failure who received peripheral blood stem cell transplantation from a completely matched donor). Patients with severe bone marrow failure have a mortality rate of 25% within the first 4 months and 50% within 1 year without stem cell transplantation.

Allogeneic stem cell transplantation is currently the only method that can cure bone marrow failure. For stem cell transplantation for patients with bone marrow failure, the optimal choice is the stem cell source of a completely compatible sibling. In addition, it is also possible to transplant from a community cord blood stem cell source, a semi-compatible transplant, or a cord blood transplant combined with a semi-compatible transplant. The National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion has applied the granulocyte transfusion method to support the fight against infection during the period when patients are waiting for neutrophil recovery after transplantation. The granulocyte mass is separated from relatives with the same blood group as the patient through an automatic separation system. This technique plays an important role in reducing the risk of death and improving the success rate of stem cell transplantation in patients with bone marrow failure.
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Ha Thanh, Director of the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, in the country, scientists and doctors have performed most of the latest techniques that are being implemented in the region and the world such as: targeted therapy with the latest drugs, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, high-quality blood transfusion for patients; there are programs to prevent congenital hemolytic anemia, improve the quality of life for patients with genetic blood diseases. In the future, the country will focus on the latest techniques that are being developed in the region and the world such as: hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, mesenchymal stem cell transplantation, cell therapy, targeted therapy with new drugs... These therapies help to predict and treat much more accurately than before, helping patients improve their quality of life and recover in some cases.
